High Speed Corvette Crash Sends SUV Airborne, Strikes Pedestrian in Wild Manhattan Collision
A violent early morning crash in Upper Manhattan sent a Mercedes Benz SUV airborne, hurled a pedestrian off his feet and left a trail of mangled vehicles and debris across an Inwood intersection Thursday, according to police and local news reports.
The August 20, 2026 collision unfolded near West 204th Street and Sherman Avenue and was captured by multiple surveillance cameras. The footage shows just how quickly an apparent case of high-speed driving turned an ordinary New York City intersection into a sprawling crash scene.
Police said a Corvette traveling eastbound on Sherman Avenue at a high rate of speed collided with a Mercedes Benz SUV. The impact sent the Mercedes flying backward into parked vehicles before it overturned on the sidewalk. The Corvette continued toward the sidewalk, where it struck a 34 year old pedestrian and sent him flying through the air before the sports car slammed into a building.
Despite the extraordinary violence of the collision, the people injured in the crash survived.
Surveillance Video Captures SUV Flying Through the Air
Security footage obtained by NBC New York shows the Mercedes entering the intersection moments before the collision. The Corvette then crashes into the SUV with enough force to send the Mercedes airborne and backward toward a row of parked vehicles.
The Mercedes crashed through parked vehicles before eventually coming to rest on its side along the sidewalk. Police said a parked moped was also struck during the chain reaction collision. At nearly the same moment, the Corvette was redirected toward the sidewalk.
The 34 year old pedestrian had virtually no opportunity to escape. Video shows the Corvette striking him and throwing him off his feet before the vehicle continued into a building. NBC New York reported that the pedestrian suffered a broken leg and was recovering in the hospital.
The Corvette driver was also injured. NBC reported that the driver was ejected during the crash but was expected to survive. CBS New York reported that two people from the Corvette and the pedestrian were transported to hospitals and were listed in stable condition.
Police Arrest Corvette Driver
Initial reports indicated that no arrests had immediately been made, but the investigation moved quickly. Later Thursday, police arrested 27-year-old Eric Torres in connection with the crash, according to NBC New York. Torres was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
CBS New York similarly reported that the Corvette driver was arrested at the hospital following the crash. The charges are particularly significant given investigators’ allegation that the Corvette was traveling at a high rate of speed immediately before the collision. The investigation remained ongoing.
Mercedes Occupants Fled After Being Pulled From Wreckage
The aftermath involving the Mercedes was nearly as dramatic as the crash itself. NBC New York reported that people inside the overturned Mercedes were initially trapped after the SUV landed on its side. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the occupants banging on the vehicle’s window as they attempted to escape.
A building superintendent, identified by NBC as Jorge Martinez, came to their aid and broke through the vehicle’s sunroof to help get them out. But according to the report, the occupants then left the scene before police arrived. Their departure added another element to an already complicated investigation as detectives worked to reconstruct the movements of both vehicles and determine exactly what occurred immediately before the impact.
Residents Say Dangerous Driving Has Become Routine
For people living around Sherman Avenue, the crash apparently did not occur in a vacuum. Residents told local reporters that excessive speeding and dangerous driving have become recurring problems in the neighborhood, particularly during late night and early morning hours.
CBS New York reported residents have complained about drivers performing doughnuts, drag racing and speeding through red lights along Sherman Avenue on what some described as a near daily basis. NBC New York similarly reported that neighbors described speeding vehicles as a persistent problem in the area.
Fresh tire marks visible around the intersection following the crash further drew attention to residents’ complaints about aggressive driving, although the existence of those marks alone does not establish which vehicle created them or when they were made.
The distinction matters. Investigators, rather than speculation based on surveillance footage or marks on the roadway, will ultimately have to determine what each driver was doing before the collision.
A Crash That Could Easily Have Been Fatal
Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the surveillance footage is that the crash did not result in a reported death. A multi-thousand pound SUV was launched into parked vehicles. A Corvette left the roadway and hit a pedestrian before striking a building. Multiple vehicles were damaged, debris covered the surrounding area and several people required hospitalization. Yet those injured were reported in stable or recovering condition.
The crash nevertheless illustrates the enormous amount of energy involved when vehicles collide at high speeds in dense urban neighborhoods. Sidewalks, parked vehicles and buildings offer pedestrians little protection once a driver loses control. For residents of Inwood who say they have repeatedly watched drivers race through the neighborhood, Thursday’s destruction may also intensify questions about traffic enforcement along Sherman Avenue. This time, the people caught in the path of the collision survived.
The surveillance footage makes painfully clear how easily the outcome could have been different.
