FAA Investigates Close Call
A potentially dangerous midair incident near Fort Lauderdale is under federal investigation after a JetBlue flight received an onboard collision warning alerting pilots to another aircraft operating nearby without communication with air traffic controllers.
According to air traffic control recordings and preliminary information released by federal authorities, the JetBlue crew was alerted by the aircraft’s Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), which warned pilots of another aircraft in close proximity. The alert indicated that the nearby aircraft was not communicating with air traffic control, creating a potentially hazardous situation in busy South Florida airspace.
The JetBlue pilots immediately responded to the warning and executed an evasive maneuver to increase separation from the unidentified aircraft. The crew successfully avoided a collision and continued the flight safely.
Air Traffic Controller: “That Guy’s Insane”
Recordings from air traffic control communications captured the tense moments following the incident. In the audio, an air traffic controller can be heard expressing frustration and concern about the other aircraft’s actions, stating, “that guy’s insane.”
The remark highlights the seriousness of the encounter and the risks posed when aircraft operate without maintaining required communications in controlled airspace.
FAA Launches Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation to determine exactly what occurred, identify the aircraft involved, and examine whether any aviation regulations were violated. Federal investigators are expected to review radar data, flight tracking information, cockpit communications, and air traffic control recordings as part of the inquiry.
