Oxygen Masks Suddenly Drop
Two separate Delta Air Lines flights experienced cabin pressurization problems, prompting emergency procedures and safe landings. One of the incidents happened aboard a Delta flight traveling from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. During the flight, the aircraft experienced a loss of cabin pressurization, causing oxygen masks to suddenly drop from the ceiling for passengers. The crew immediately responded to the emergency and began a rapid descent. The aircraft descended thousands of feet in a matter of minutes as the pilots worked to bring the plane to an altitude where passengers could safely breathe without relying on the cabin’s normal pressurization system. Instead of continuing to Salt Lake City, the crew diverted the flight to Las Vegas. The aircraft landed safely, and passengers were able to leave the plane.
A Second Flight Reports Pressurization Problem
A separate Delta flight also experienced a pressurization issue, prompting the crew to return to its departure airport. The flight was traveling from New York to Phoenix when the crew reported a possible cabin pressurization problem. The aircraft turned around and safely landed back at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Passengers were not reported to have suffered injuries in connection with the incident. The aircraft was expected to undergo a maintenance inspection before returning to service.
Why Pressurization Emergencies Are Taken Seriously
Cabin pressurization is essential because commercial aircraft typically fly at altitudes where the outside air contains too little oxygen for people to breathe normally. If an aircraft loses cabin pressure at cruising altitude, pilots are trained to quickly descend to a lower altitude. Oxygen masks provide passengers with supplemental oxygen while the aircraft makes the descent. The sudden deployment of oxygen masks can be alarming for passengers, but it is an important part of the aircraft’s emergency safety system.
Both Flights Landed Safely
While the two Delta incidents happened separately, both involved crews responding to potential problems with cabin pressure. The Las Vegas flight required a rapid descent after oxygen masks deployed, while the second flight returned to its departure airport after the crew identified a possible pressurization issue. Both aircraft landed safely. The incidents also highlight the importance of the procedures and training airline crews use when something goes wrong at cruising altitude.
