Atlanta Braves Rally Late to Beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1

Tampa Bay Denied Chance to Clinch Playoff Berth

The Atlanta Braves finally got their offense going when it mattered most Thursday, rallying in the eighth inning to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 and prevent Tampa Bay from becoming the first team to clinch a playoff berth.

The Rays entered the game at 87-59 with a four-game lead in the American League East and a chance to secure at least a wild-card spot with a victory combined with a Texas loss to Seattle or a Chicago White Sox loss to Pittsburgh. Instead, Atlanta’s late offensive surge and a dominant pitching performance turned the game in the Braves’ favor.

Pérez Dominates Before Braves Break Through

Martín Pérez delivered one of Atlanta’s best pitching performances of the series, throwing seven scoreless innings and keeping the Braves in the game despite their offensive struggles.

Tampa Bay had an opportunity to strike immediately in the first inning after loading the bases with three consecutive singles. However, Chandler Simpson grounded into an inning-ending double play. The play began with a sharp grounder to first baseman Matt Olson, who fired home for the force before catcher Drake Baldwin’s return throw to first narrowly beat the speedy Simpson.

The Braves were held to just two hits over 6 1/3 innings by Nick Martinez, who continued Atlanta’s offensive frustrations after the team scored only three runs during a three-game losing streak. Atlanta had also dropped the first two games of the series against Tampa Bay by a combined 14-3 score. But the Braves finally found their breakthrough against the Rays’ bullpen.

Riley Delivers Go-Ahead Hit in Eighth

Atlanta’s offense erupted in the eighth inning, stringing together five consecutive hits after being held in check for most of the night. Pinch-hitter Ozzie Albies started the rally with his first triple of the season, driving a ball against Kevin Kelly. Austin Riley followed with a run-scoring single that gave the Braves their first lead of the series.

The Braves then added an important insurance run when Ha-Seong Kim delivered a two-run single, giving Atlanta a 3-0 advantage.

Didier Fuentes worked a scoreless eighth inning to earn the victory and improve to 6-2. The win provided a significant boost for the Braves, who began the day with a three-game lead over second-place Philadelphia in the National League East.

Rays Make It Interesting in Ninth

Tampa Bay refused to go quietly in the ninth. Victor Mesa Jr. led off the inning with a home run against Raisel Iglesias, cutting Atlanta’s lead to 3-1 and putting pressure on the Braves closer.

Iglesias responded by retiring the next three batters to preserve the victory. The save was his 32nd in 35 opportunities this season.

The Braves’ combination of Pérez’s seven scoreless innings and a timely eighth-inning rally allowed them to escape with a much-needed victory and some momentum heading into a critical series against Philadelphia.

Weekend Series with Playoff Implications

The Rays return home to begin a three-game series against the Houston Astros. Right-hander Drew Rasmussen, 14-5 with a 2.88 ERA, is scheduled to start the opener for Tampa Bay.

The Braves will immediately turn their attention to Philadelphia for a pivotal National League East matchup. Atlanta ace Chris Sale, 14-9 with a 2.10 ERA, is scheduled to face Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola, who enters at 6-10 with a 4.76 ERA.

After struggling to generate offense for much of the series, Atlanta’s late rally against Tampa Bay could provide the spark the Braves need as they enter one of the most important stretches of their season.
