Ex-University of Miami Doctor Accused of Sexually Batterying Medical Students

Ex-University of Miami Doctor Arrested

A former University of Miami doctor and professor has been arrested on three counts of sexual battery after police accused him of using his position as a physician and mentor to subject medical students and trainees to unnecessary and invasive examinations.

Ranjith Ramasamy, 45, surrendered to authorities in South Florida after returning from Dubai, where he had been working as a consultant urologist. He was arrested Thursday at Miami International Airport, according to court records and police.

Ramasamy previously served as the University of Miami’s director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery and held positions as an assistant and associate professor of urology. His employment with the university ended in 2024.

According to an arrest warrant, investigators identified six alleged victims. Three of those allegations resulted in the sexual battery charges currently facing Ramasamy. The alleged victims identified in the investigation were male students, fellows or trainees.

Police allege Ramasamy used purported medical concerns and research-related testing as a justification for intimate examinations that experts later determined were medically unnecessary.

In one allegation, a former trainee said Ramasamy requested a semen analysis and subsequently recommended repeated examinations, including examinations of the testicles, penis and prostate. Investigators said an outside medical expert determined that some of the procedures did not serve a legitimate medical purpose.

Another alleged victim told investigators that Ramasamy requested a semen sample while the individual was participating in research. The doctor later recommended a rectal prostate examination. According to the arrest warrant, the examination was significantly more aggressive than examinations the alleged victim had previously observed.

Investigators also allege Ramasamy performed repeated rectal and prostate procedures on that individual between October 2022 and March 2023 while describing them as physical therapy. A medical expert reportedly concluded that the procedures were inconsistent with the standard of care and outside acceptable medical practice.

A third alleged victim told investigators that Ramasamy initially requested a semen sample for a database connected to a cryopreservation laboratory. The doctor later recommended additional testing and surgery, followed by prostate examinations. Investigators said an expert later determined there was no clinical justification for the rectal examinations.

The warrant also describes allegations involving three additional people. Those allegations are not part of the three sexual battery charges currently filed against Ramasamy.

Authorities allege that Ramasamy sometimes relied on purported abnormal test results or diagnoses to justify further examinations. Investigators specifically alleged that one victim was presented with what police described as a false sexually transmitted disease test before additional procedures were performed.

The case centers on allegations that medical authority was used to create situations in which students and trainees believed invasive procedures were medically necessary.

Ramasamy appeared before a judge Thursday. His bond was set at $120,000, and he was ordered to remain under house arrest with GPS monitoring and to have no contact with the alleged victims.

The allegations remain accusations, and Ramasamy has not been convicted of the charges. The case will proceed through the criminal court system, where prosecutors will be required to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.

The University of Miami was contacted for comment regarding the allegations and Ramasamy’s former employment.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional allegations described in the arrest warrant are separate from the three charges currently filed.
