Landmark Lawsuit Seeks to Force Release of Trump-Era Epstein Files
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump-Vance administration is facing its first legal challenge over the handling of the so-called “Epstein Files,” a cache of government records allegedly detailing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s network of powerful clients and associates. The lawsuit, filed today by the national pro-democracy legal organization Democracy Forward, accuses the administration of unlawfully withholding documents of extraordinary public interest.
Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the suit demands that the federal government immediately comply with public records laws and produce the requested materials. Democracy Forward says those records could shed light on communications between senior Trump administration officials and Epstein, as well as the Department of Justice’s and FBI’s review of the financier’s activities.
“President Trump has repeatedly said he would release the Epstein files, his spokesperson claims his administration is ‘the most transparent in history,’ and yet, they continue to hide from the American people,” said Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. “The only thing transparent about the Trump-Vance administration is how clearly they continue to disregard our nation’s laws.”
According to the complaint, Democracy Forward submitted multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests on July 25, 2025, seeking:
Senior administration officials’ communications regarding Epstein documents.
Correspondence between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein.
Internal records related to the government’s review of the Epstein case.
The organization also invoked a legal provision allowing for expedited processing of FOIA requests, citing “an extraordinary need to inform the public” about how the administration is managing the Epstein records. While the Justice Department and FBI confirmed receipt of the requests, the demand for expedited handling was ignored, prompting today’s legal action.
Perryman argued that the administration’s stonewalling is part of a pattern of secrecy that undermines public trust. “Public records laws outline a clear and simple process that requires the government to immediately produce important documents in response to urgent public information requests,” she said. “Yet again, this administration is ignoring the law. The court should intervene urgently to ensure the public has access to the information they need about this extraordinary situation.”
The legal team representing Democracy Forward in the case includes Senior Oversight Counsel Daniel McGrath, Counsel Amy C. Vickery, and Legal Director Robin Thurston. The complaint marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight to uncover the full scope of Epstein’s connections to high-profile political and business figures and whether the Trump administration has acted to conceal those ties.
