New Ronald McDonald House Opens
A major new project in downtown Miami is set to provide a lifeline for families of hospitalized children. The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of South Florida is constructing a new seven-story facility designed to give families a “home away from home,” allowing them to stay close to their children without facing overwhelming costs.
Expanding Capacity for Families in Need
The current RMHC house near Jackson Memorial Medical Center has 31 bedrooms, often leaving over 120 families per year without accommodation. The new building will nearly double the capacity with 54 private en-suite rooms, serving more than 420 families annually, providing over 5,700 nights of lodging each year. The expansion aims to ensure no family is turned away due to lack of space.
Prime Location for Patient Support
Located just steps from Holtz Children’s Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital, the facility ensures families can remain close to their child’s care. Being near the hospital is vital for emotional support, allowing parents to participate in their child’s treatment and recovery while avoiding long commutes.
Design, Funding, and Partnerships
The seven-story building is being designed by Justin Architects with CAMCON serving as general contractor. The project has a $33 million budget, with $26 million already raised through donations and fundraising campaigns. The remaining funds are being sought through the “Hope Has a New Home” campaign, which includes innovative partnerships, such as donations from local businesses for each gallon of gas sold at participating stations. The site is secured through a 50-year lease for $1 per year, demonstrating strong public-private collaboration.
Family-Focused Amenities
The new house will provide private bedrooms, communal kitchens, dining areas, laundry facilities, and spaces for relaxation and recreation. The design emphasizes emotional support as well as comfort, with areas for children to play and parents to rest or connect with other families facing similar challenges.
Community Impact
The expansion is expected to reduce the number of turned-away families, provide substantial economic relief for families who otherwise face high lodging costs, and strengthen community engagement through volunteer and donor involvement. By keeping families close to their hospitalized children, the house improves both emotional well-being and access to critical care.
Looking Ahead
Construction is underway, with an anticipated opening within the next two years. The new Ronald McDonald House will serve as a vital resource for families in South Florida, offering support, comfort, and a sense of community during some of life’s most difficult moments.
