Jacksonville Sheriff Announces Arrests in Illegal Gambling Ring

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sheriff T.K. Waters revealed Wednesday the arrests of 12 individuals allegedly involved in operating illegal gambling businesses across Jacksonville. The investigation, named “Operation Fish & Chips,” began in March 2023 and concluded this month, marking a significant crackdown on organized crime in the area.

The suspects face charges that include racketeering, money laundering, and illegal use of gaming equipment. Over the past ten days, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) SWAT unit carried out search warrants at multiple locations, seizing substantial assets believed to be connected to the operation.

Assets and Evidence Seized

Sheriff Waters reported that law enforcement confiscated over $2.5 million in cash, 15 vehicles valued at more than $1 million, two houses, a commercial building, and 52 firearms. He emphasized that all seized property was purchased using proceeds from the illegal gambling enterprise.

“These operations fund other criminal activities and contribute to violence in our communities,” Waters stated.

Connection to Other Crimes

The sites of the illegal gambling activities were reportedly linked to various other crimes throughout the past year. According to JSO, these locations were connected to two homicides, eight robberies, and 26 aggravated assaults.

“These aren’t just places for illegal gambling—they are hubs for dangerous criminal behavior,” Waters said during the announcement.

Broader Implications

Authorities say the arrests mark a critical step in dismantling organized crime networks in Jacksonville. While Waters declined to disclose whether additional suspects are under investigation, he suggested that the operation has exposed a complex web of criminal activity in the city.

The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as law enforcement continues efforts to combat illegal gambling and associated crimes.

This investigation follows a broader crackdown on illegal gambling in the state, demonstrating a commitment by law enforcement to address the roots of criminal enterprises.
