Haaland’s Late Winner Sends Norway Into World Cup Last 16 With 2-1 Victory Over Ivory Coast

Erling Haaland delivered when it mattered most, scoring the decisive goal in the 86th minute to lift Norway to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the Round of 32 on Tuesday and send the Scandinavians into the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history.

The victory marked Norway’s first-ever knockout-stage win at a World Cup and continued an impressive tournament for Haaland, whose fifth goal in just three matches cemented his status as one of the competition’s standout performers.

Norway will now face five-time world champions Brazil in the Round of 16 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, setting up a fascinating rematch nearly three decades in the making.

The winning goal came after a brilliant attacking move in the closing minutes. Midfielder Patrick Berg surged into the penalty area, drawing three Ivory Coast defenders toward him before calmly slipping a pass across the box to a completely unmarked Haaland. The Manchester City striker made no mistake, firing home from close range to spark jubilant celebrations among the Norwegian supporters.

The dramatic finish capped an entertaining contest that swung back and forth throughout the second half.

Norway struck first thanks to the brilliance of Antonio Nusa, who curled a superb effort into the net to give his side a deserved advantage. The young winger’s composed finish rewarded Norway for an energetic opening spell in which they controlled possession and consistently threatened the Ivory Coast defense.

Norway appeared poised to double their lead after halftime, but Ivory Coast goalkeeper and defenders combined to deny several dangerous opportunities, keeping the African side within striking distance.

Their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when Amad Diallo brought Ivory Coast level. After previously preventing Norway from extending their advantage earlier in the second half, Diallo produced a clinical left-footed finish inside the penalty area, beating the Norwegian goalkeeper to make it 1-1 and set up a tense finale.

With extra time looming, Norway continued pressing for a winner, and their persistence was rewarded four minutes from the end of regulation.

Berg’s intelligent run and unselfish pass created the opening, while Haaland once again demonstrated his predatory instincts by arriving in the perfect position to score the decisive goal.

The victory is another landmark achievement for a Norwegian side making its first World Cup appearance since 1998. That tournament also ended with the Norwegians reaching the knockout stage after one of the most memorable victories in the nation’s football history—a stunning 2-1 comeback against defending world champions Brazil in the group stage.

In that famous match 28 years ago, Norway scored in the 83rd and 89th minutes to overturn a deficit and defeat Brazil, a result still regarded by many as the country’s greatest football triumph.

Now, history has handed Norway another opportunity against the South American giants.

Sunday’s Round of 16 showdown with Brazil will evoke memories of that unforgettable 1998 encounter, but this Norwegian team enters with renewed confidence and one of the world’s most dangerous forwards leading the attack.

Haaland has now scored five goals in three World Cup matches, emerging as one of the tournament favorites for the Golden Boot while spearheading Norway’s remarkable run.

For Ivory Coast, the defeat ends a spirited World Cup campaign. Despite Diallo’s equalizer giving them hope of extending the match, they were ultimately undone by Norway’s quality in the closing stages.

Norway, meanwhile, continue writing a new chapter in their football history. After securing their first World Cup knockout victory, they now prepare for another date with Brazil, hoping lightning can strike twice against the five-time champions and extend their dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
