Former SEAL Team 6 Operator Recounts Watching His Chief Fight a Navy Dolphin Underwater
Former Navy SEAL Clint Emerson has revealed one of the strangest training exercises of his military career: being dropped into San Diego Bay as a live target for the U.S. Navy’s trained dolphins, only to watch his platoon chief end up trading blows with one of the animals underwater.
Emerson, a retired Navy SEAL who later served with the elite SEAL Team 6, described the extraordinary encounter during an August 27 appearance on the Shawn Ryan Show. The exercise occurred earlier in his career, during his pre-9/11 service with SEAL Team 3, when his 14 man platoon was given an opportunity to test itself against dolphins trained to detect combat swimmers. Emerson’s account is anecdotal, but the military program at the center of his story is very real: the U.S. Navy has trained bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions for decades to detect underwater threats, locate objects and support maritime security operations.
The U.S. Navy Really Does Train Military Dolphins
The Navy Marine Mammal Program dates to the 1960s and is based in San Diego, where the military has spent decades studying and training marine mammals for specialized underwater missions. The program ultimately concentrated primarily on bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions because their natural capabilities allow them to perform tasks that can be extremely difficult for human divers and even sophisticated underwater technology.
Dolphins possess highly developed biological sonar, or echolocation, allowing them to emit clicks and analyze the returning echoes to identify objects underwater. That ability can remain effective in dark, murky or cluttered environments where human vision is nearly useless. California sea lions, meanwhile, possess excellent underwater vision and maneuverability and can be trained to locate and recover submerged equipment.
The Navy has publicly documented the use of marine mammals for mine detection, object recovery and maritime security. Navy environmental documents also describe the deployment of trained bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions as part of marine-mammal mine hunting and object recovery systems. Historically, dolphins have also been trained for swimmer detection and harbor defense missions designed to identify unauthorized divers attempting to penetrate protected military waters.
The SEALs Became the Dolphins’ Training Targets
According to Emerson, the mission involved his entire 14 man SEAL platoon, divided into seven dive pairs and deployed into San Diego Bay. The SEALs were equipped with closed circuit Draeger rebreathers, which recycle a diver’s breathing gas and produce few or no visible bubbles, making them particularly useful for covert underwater operations.
The objective was simple: hide from the dolphins.
Emerson recalled being paired with his platoon chief, who decided they would attempt to conceal themselves around the underwater structure of a pier. The chief wrapped himself around a submerged piling in an attempt to blend into the structure while Emerson stretched out their buddy line, descended to the bottom and lay against the sand. The plan did not fool the dolphin.
Emerson said he eventually began hearing the animal’s distinctive echolocation clicks underwater. Because sound travels differently underwater and can be difficult for divers to localize, he could hear the dolphin but could not determine exactly where it was coming from. Then, without warning, he felt a powerful impact directly in the center of his back. The dolphin had found him.
According to Emerson, the impact drove him farther into the sandy bottom. Recognizing that he had apparently been successfully detected, he stayed down. Moments later, however, he heard his chief yelling through his rebreather mouthpiece and turned around to see something he would remember for decades.
The Navy Dolphin and the SEAL Chief Started Fighting
Emerson said he rolled over and saw the dolphin hovering near his chief underwater. His chief attempted to punch the animal away, but fighting underwater presented an obvious problem: water resistance dramatically slowed the SEAL’s punches while the dolphin remained almost perfectly adapted to rapid movement through the environment. The encounter quickly became an almost surreal exchange. According to Emerson, his chief would attempt to strike the dolphin, which would move away and then accelerate back toward him, slamming directly into his chest and Draeger rebreather. The chief would swing again, and the dolphin would return with another hit.
Emerson said the impacts appeared to become progressively harder. He remained at the end of his buddy line, watching the confrontation while making no effort to get closer. The reason the dolphin kept returning, Emerson said, eventually became clear. During the exercise, the animal carried a Styrofoam style marker on its snout that was supposed to detach after making contact with the target and float toward the surface. That marker provided the handlers above with confirmation that the dolphin had successfully intercepted the swimmer.
But the marker apparently failed to release when the dolphin struck the chief. According to Emerson, his chief eventually figured out what was happening, grabbed the marker himself, pulled it off the dolphin and released it into the water. Once the device began floating toward the surface, the dolphin apparently recognized that the interception had been completed and disappeared. Emerson described the entire encounter as simultaneously funny and remarkable, but it also demonstrated why a trained dolphin presents an extraordinary challenge for even an elite military diver. A human being may dominate on land, but underwater the physical advantage changes dramatically.
The Navy Has Actually Used Dolphins for Swimmer Defense
The swimmer-defense concept described by Emerson is not merely military folklore. Historical Navy documentation describes marine-mammal systems specifically developed to detect unauthorized swimmers and divers around protected facilities and naval assets.
One of those systems, historically designated the Mark 6 Marine Mammal System, used bottlenose dolphins for swimmer detection and maritime security. Marine mammals have been used in operational environments dating back decades, including overseas deployments associated with U.S. military operations.
The Navy’s broader marine mammal capability has also included mine detection and underwater object recovery. During major exercises, dolphins have demonstrated the ability to locate simulated mines and deploy markers identifying their positions for personnel operating on the surface.
That documented history makes Emerson’s description of SEALs serving as opposing swimmers during training entirely plausible. Using trained military divers as realistic targets would allow Navy handlers to evaluate whether the dolphins could detect people specifically trained to infiltrate defended waterways while minimizing their underwater signatures.
The Story of the Navy Dolphin Named “Jake”
Emerson’s account becomes considerably harder to verify when he describes stories circulating among SEALs about an especially powerful Navy dolphin named “Jake.”
According to Emerson, there were rumors that Jake had struck SEALs during training with enough force to break ribs and even injure their backs. Emerson said the dolphin was eventually retired and further claimed that stories circulated suggesting Jake had recorded “kills” during an overseas harbor deployment. Those claims should be treated as military lore rather than established fact.
There is a major difference between the Navy’s documented swimmer-detection programs and claims that dolphins were deliberately trained to kill enemy divers. The Navy has acknowledged using dolphins to detect and mark swimmers, but publicly available records do not independently establish Emerson’s claims about Jake, confirm that the animal killed enemy swimmers or demonstrate that Navy dolphins routinely carried lethal weapons.
The distinction is important because the Marine Mammal Program has attracted decades of sensational stories about armed dolphins carrying explosives, needles or other devices capable of killing divers. Some of those stories have become deeply embedded in popular culture despite limited public evidence supporting them.
Emerson himself characterized the Jake story as something he had heard rather than an event he personally witnessed. His direct account of the San Diego exercise therefore carries a different evidentiary weight than the stories he repeated about the animal’s alleged operational history.
The Real Weapon Is the Dolphin’s Sonar
The most impressive capability of the Navy’s dolphins is not necessarily their physical strength. It is their ability to find objects and people underwater. Bottlenose dolphins use echolocation by producing rapid clicking sounds and interpreting the echoes reflected from objects around them. This biological sonar allows them to distinguish targets in environments where visibility may be measured in feet or even inches.
Military harbors can be particularly challenging environments for conventional detection systems. Pilings, cables, rocks, debris, vessels, vegetation and other underwater structures create clutter that can make identifying a single human diver extremely difficult. A combat swimmer using a closed circuit rebreather compounds that challenge by eliminating much of the bubble signature produced by conventional scuba equipment.
Yet according to Emerson, even experienced Navy SEALs using covert diving equipment and deliberately attempting to camouflage themselves against the bottom and underwater structures could not escape detection. The episode provides a striking demonstration of why the Navy invested decades into the program. Technology has advanced enormously since the first military marine mammal experiments of the 1960s, but biological systems developed through millions of years of evolution remain exceptionally capable underwater sensors.
Marine Mammals Have Served Alongside the U.S. Military for Decades
The Navy’s marine mammals have participated in a surprisingly broad range of military operations and exercises. Their documented missions have included locating underwater mines, recovering submerged objects and equipment, identifying underwater threats and supporting security around strategically important naval facilities.
The animals can also be transported to operational areas when required, giving the Navy a specialized capability that can be deployed outside San Diego. Marine mammals have historically supported American military operations overseas, including deployments connected to Vietnam and the Persian Gulf.
The program has simultaneously developed an extensive veterinary and scientific infrastructure. Navy researchers have studied marine-mammal cognition, hearing, echolocation, physiology and health, producing research with applications extending beyond military operations. That broader history is important because it separates the extraordinary but documented reality of the program from the mythology surrounding it. The United States does not need fictional laser equipped dolphins to make the Marine Mammal Program remarkable. Training an animal capable of locating a covert military diver hiding underwater is extraordinary enough.
Even Navy SEALs Have Trouble Hiding From a Dolphin
Emerson’s story sounds like something written for an action comedy: a group of elite Navy SEALs scattered across San Diego Bay trying to hide from military dolphins while one platoon chief finds himself exchanging underwater blows with an animal that refuses to leave until its training marker finally reaches the surface. But underneath the humor is a legitimate military capability developed over more than half a century.
The Navy recognized decades ago that dolphins possess underwater sensory abilities humans cannot naturally reproduce. Their echolocation allows them to operate in darkness and poor visibility, identify unusual objects among underwater clutter and locate targets attempting to remain hidden. Sea lions offer another combination of intelligence, underwater vision and maneuverability that makes them valuable for specialized recovery missions.
Emerson’s account offers a rare glimpse of what happens when those abilities are tested against some of the military’s most highly trained combat swimmers. His claims about lethal dolphins and the legendary Jake remain unverified and should be treated accordingly, but his description of SEALs training against Navy dolphins fits within a well-documented military program built specifically around underwater detection.
On that particular day in San Diego Bay, according to Emerson, the humans tried camouflage, covert diving equipment and one extremely slow underwater fistfight. The dolphin still won.
