Inter Miami CF vs. Atlanta United FC: Messi and the Herons Look to Keep Rolling

Inter Miami CF returns to MLS action when Atlanta United FC visits Nu Stadium for a highly anticipated Eastern Conference matchup.

The timing could hardly be better for Miami. After enduring a frustrating stretch of results, the Herons exploded against CF Montréal, cruising to a 7-1 victory behind a spectacular four-goal performance from Lionel Messi. The performance earned Messi MLS Player of the Matchday honors and pushed his league-leading goal total to 18.

Now Atlanta gets the unenviable task of trying to slow down a Miami attack that suddenly looks wide awake. Luis Suárez remains another major threat, while the addition of midfielder Casemiro gives Miami another elite veteran capable of controlling the middle of the field.

Atlanta enters the matchup after a 2-0 loss to Charlotte FC, although the Five Stripes had won their previous two matches against Sporting Kansas City and Minnesota United. That makes Saturday’s contest an intriguing test of whether Atlanta can rebound or whether Miami’s offensive explosion was the beginning of another hot streak.

For Inter Miami, the objective is simple: keep the momentum going. With Messi playing like a man who apparently hasn’t received the memo that he’s supposed to slow down at 39, the Herons will look to turn another home match into a showcase and continue their push toward the MLS playoffs.

2026 Orange Blossom Classic: Florida A&M University Rattlers vs. South Carolina State Bulldogs @ Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens

The Orange Blossom Classic is back in South Florida, and this year’s matchup has all the ingredients of an old-school HBCU football weekend: two respected programs, championship expectations, massive alumni bases, legendary marching bands and a Labor Day crowd ready for college football to officially get serious.

The matchup is particularly intriguing because South Carolina State enters the Classic as the defending HBCU national champion, while Florida A&M is beginning a new chapter under head coach Quinn Gray Sr. The Rattlers opened the 2026 season on August 29 with a 20-7 victory over Albany State, giving FAMU some early momentum heading into Miami.

The Orange Blossom Classic is considerably more than another football game awkwardly wedged onto a holiday weekend. The event dates back to 1933 and became one of the most important showcases in HBCU football before eventually disappearing after 1978. It returned in 2021 and has once again become a major Labor Day tradition in South Florida.

For generations, the Classic has represented the intersection of football, Black college culture, music, education and community. And naturally, because humans apparently cannot attend a football game without turning it into a full-scale cultural festival, the weekend includes concerts, tailgating, community events, alumni gatherings and one of the biggest attractions of all: the marching bands.

This year’s halftime Battle of the Bands will feature Florida A&M’s legendary Marching 100 against South Carolina State’s Marching 101. The Orange Blossom Classic organizers have positioned the entire weekend as a celebration of HBCU culture rather than simply a football game.

Florida A&M enters the game with plenty of motivation.

The Rattlers are coming off a 20-7 victory over Albany State and are in the first full season of the Quinn Gray Sr. era. Gray, a former FAMU player, is attempting to restore the Rattlers to championship contention while navigating one of the more demanding early stretches imaginable.

After facing South Carolina State in Miami, FAMU doesn’t get much time to recover. The Rattlers travel to Coral Gables four days later to face the University of Miami on September 10.

That makes the Orange Blossom Classic particularly important. A victory over the defending HBCU national champion would give FAMU an immediate statement win before taking on an FBS opponent.

South Carolina State isn’t coming to Miami to participate in somebody else’s party.

The Bulldogs arrive as the defending HBCU national champions and represent one of the strongest programs in the MEAC. Head coach Chennis Berry has helped establish South Carolina State as a program capable of competing for championships, and the Bulldogs enter the Classic with plenty of confidence.

That creates an interesting dynamic. FAMU has the home-state advantage and one of the most recognizable brands in HBCU football. South Carolina State has the defending-national-champion label.

Something has to give.

For South Florida sports fans, the game is also an opportunity to experience one of the country’s most recognizable HBCU football traditions without having to leave Miami.

Hard Rock Stadium will host the game, with the stadium’s South Lawn serving as the center of the Fan Fest activities. The weekend is expected to include food, entertainment, alumni events and live performances, while the football itself provides the centerpiece.

The official Orange Blossom Classic schedule also features performances from Miami legends Trick Daddy and Trina as part of the Fan Fest experience.

And then there are the bands.

FAMU’s Marching 100 and South Carolina State’s Marching 101 are expected to provide one of the day’s biggest spectacles. For many fans, the halftime performance is practically its own sporting event. There are worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon than watching two elite HBCU marching bands attempt to collectively make every other halftime show in America look embarrassingly underprepared.

The 2026 Orange Blossom Classic represents another step in the event’s return to prominence. Organizers are emphasizing its impact beyond the stadium, including opportunities for community engagement, economic activity, tourism and scholarships.

That is ultimately what makes the Orange Blossom Classic different from a typical college football game.

There will be a winner and a loser on the scoreboard, but the larger event is about celebrating the history and influence of HBCUs while bringing that culture directly into South Florida.

For FAMU, the mission is straightforward: beat the defending national champion, establish the new era under Quinn Gray and walk out of Hard Rock Stadium with some serious momentum.

For South Carolina State, it’s about protecting its championship reputation and reminding everyone that last season’s title wasn’t a fluke.

Either way, Miami is getting one hell of a football weekend.
