A woman accused of carrying out a stabbing spree in the heart of New York City’s Times Square is dead after police shot her during a confrontation, while one of the people she allegedly attacked also died from her injuries.

The violent incident unfolded Monday afternoon in one of the busiest areas of Manhattan, where tourists, workers and commuters were gathered. Authorities said the suspect was armed with at least one knife when she allegedly attacked two people before officers confronted her.

Two People Attacked

According to officials, the suspect allegedly approached a 68 year old man near Times Square and stabbed him in the abdomen. She then continued through the area and attacked a 32 year old woman.

The female victim was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital. She later died from her injuries, according to authorities.

The male victim was also hospitalized. Officials said he survived the attack and was reported to be in stable condition.

Investigators are treating the attacks as apparently random and have not indicated that the victims and suspect knew one another.

Police Shoot Suspect

Officers located the suspect shortly after the attacks and attempted to take her into custody.

Authorities said officers ordered the woman to drop the weapon, but she refused to comply. Police ultimately opened fire when they said the suspect posed an immediate threat.

The woman was struck by police gunfire and taken to a hospital for treatment. She later died.

Authorities are reviewing body camera footage and other evidence as part of the investigation into the police shooting.

Times Square Scene Locked Down

The stabbing and subsequent police shooting prompted a significant emergency response in Times Square.

The area, which is typically packed with visitors, was temporarily disrupted as police secured the scene and investigators worked to collect evidence.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as officers responded to the violence and emergency crews rushed to assist the victims.

Authorities have not announced a clear motive for the attacks. Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage, witness statements and other evidence to determine exactly what led to the stabbing spree.
