Hughes, who was 26 when his story was documented, spent roughly six years experiencing homelessness. During that time, he battled addiction and became caught in a cycle that made rebuilding his life increasingly difficult.
His addiction included fentanyl and crack cocaine, substances that Hughes said became part of his daily existence while he was living on the streets.

Victor Oliveira, known online as Victor “The Good Boss,” had developed a following for videos showing him helping people experiencing homelessness and addiction. After coming across Hughes, Oliveira decided to seek him out.
When the two eventually connected, Oliveira offered Hughes something that went beyond a temporary handout. He offered to help him enter treatment and begin addressing his addiction.
The encounter was documented on social media and quickly attracted attention.
Oliveira helped Hughes get food and new clothes before taking steps toward getting him into detox and treatment.
For Hughes, the encounter became the beginning of a completely different chapter.
Recovery Became The Priority
Getting into treatment was only the beginning. Hughes still had to confront the addiction and the circumstances that had kept him on the streets for years.
He ultimately began working toward sobriety and rebuilding his life.
His progress was significant enough that, by 2026, Hughes had reached a full year of sobriety.
That milestone represented more than simply staying away from drugs. It meant establishing a routine, finding work and beginning to build stability after years without it.
A New Life Through Work
Hughes eventually found employment in Delray Beach, where he began working on docks and replacing decking.
The job gave him something that had been missing from his life for years: responsibility and a sense of purpose.
His employer described Hughes as someone who had become an important part of the workplace and said he was becoming like family.
For Hughes, the transformation was difficult to ignore. He had gone from spending years trying to survive on the streets to getting up, going to work and earning a living.

Hughes has repeatedly credited Oliveira with helping him get the opportunity to change his life.
He described Oliveira as someone who saved his life, while Oliveira has spoken publicly about how proud he is of Hughes’ progress.

The opportunity may have started with an unexpected encounter, but Hughes still had to make the decision to enter treatment, pursue sobriety and continue rebuilding his life.
