Kamala Harris On Why She Chose Governor Tim Walz As Her Vice Presidential Nominee

How Harris Got to Walz for VP

August 6, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris had just 16 days to make one of the most crucial decisions of her political career. She ultimately chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, a decision that surprised many and left an indelible mark on her evolving public image.

Walz, a relative dark horse in the race, was not initially on the shortlist of potential candidates. However, his media blitz, fueled by his charismatic and relatable demeanor, won him significant favor among Harris and key national Democrats.

The Decision-Making Process

With President Joe Biden stepping aside, Harris had to act quickly. Her team considered various factors, including personal rapport, loyalty, and public perception. Walz, with his military background and gun-owning, Midwestern charm, was seen as a complementary partner to Harris. His ability to communicate effectively without a teleprompter was also noted, though he did practice with one before his debut rally speech in Philadelphia.

Harris had narrowed her final list to three candidates: Walz, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. After in-person interviews, Harris found the best connection with Walz, trusting her instincts that he would be a steadfast and loyal partner.

The Appeal of Tim Walz

Walz, a gun-owning hunter who enlisted in the Army National Guard at 17, presented a compelling figure to Harris and her team. His down-to-earth personality and ability to connect with moderate Republican voters made him an attractive choice. Despite being relatively unknown nationally, Walz’s “dad charm” and relatable nature won over many within the Democratic Party.

The Final Selection

The vetting process, led by former Attorney General Eric Holder and former White House counsel Dana Remus, was rigorous. By Saturday, the list had been narrowed to Walz, Shapiro, and Kelly. The final in-person interviews took place at the Washington Naval Observatory, home to the vice president’s residence.

Reaction and Implications

Harris’s choice of Walz surprised many Democrats, including top party donors who were unfamiliar with him. However, once they learned about him, the response was overwhelmingly positive. Chris Korge, Harris campaign national finance chair, noted that donors were impressed by Walz’s relatability.

Walz’s Midwestern Appeal

Walz’s ability to connect with Midwestern voters and his history of winning in a state with a significant Muslim community were seen as key advantages. His selection also had the added benefit of elevating Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who would become the first Indigenous female governor in American history if Walz steps down.

The Strategy of the Walz Pic

Walz’s selection is a strategic move by Harris, aimed at appealing to moderate and swing voters while maintaining a loyal and effective partnership. As the campaign moves forward, Harris is betting on Walz’s Midwestern appeal and affable personality to help secure a victory in the upcoming election.
