Morocco booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a pulsating 1-1 draw in Guadalupe, Mexico.
The North Africans held their nerve from the spot as Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty after a tense shootout filled with missed kicks and outstanding goalkeeping, sending Morocco into a last 16 showdown with co-hosts Canada while ending the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign in heartbreaking fashion.
The opening half was an intense, physical battle with both teams matching each other stride for stride. Possession and momentum swung back and forth, but neither side could find the breakthrough as defenses stood firm and chances remained limited.
Morocco emerged from halftime looking the more dangerous side and nearly grabbed the lead early in the second half. A perfectly weighted through ball sent Achraf Hakimi racing clear on goal, but the Paris Saint-Germain fullback saw his effort cannon off the crossbar, leaving the Moroccan supporters with their heads in their hands.
As the match entered its final 20 minutes, Morocco continued to press and appeared to have taken control, only for the Netherlands to produce a devastating counterattack.
In the 72nd minute, a long goal kick found substitute Wout Weghorst near midfield. The towering striker flicked a clever header into the path of Crysencio Summerville, who drove toward the Moroccan defense before sliding a perfectly timed pass to Cody Gakpo. The Liverpool forward calmly slotted his finish into the corner to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead.
Gakpo was immediately overcome with emotion after scoring. The goal came just days after he and his partner, Noa van der Bij, publicly revealed they had suffered a pregnancy loss, making the moment particularly poignant.
The Netherlands appeared destined to see out the victory, but Morocco refused to surrender.
With the clock reaching the 90th minute, a dangerous cross into the penalty area found a charging Issa Diop, whose powerful header nestled into the corner of the net to spark jubilant celebrations and force extra time.
Morocco nearly completed the comeback just two minutes into the additional period. Soufiane Rahimi dazzled with brilliant footwork to create a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but the Dutch keeper produced a magnificent save, getting just enough of the ball to keep his team alive.
Both sides continued searching for a winner throughout the extra 30 minutes, but tired legs and determined defending ensured the score remained level, sending the contest to penalties.
The shootout proved just as dramatic as the match itself. Both teams squandered opportunities from the spot as goalkeepers made crucial saves, but Morocco ultimately held their composure.
Ismael Saibari stepped up to take the decisive kick and calmly buried his penalty to seal a 3-2 shootout triumph, igniting wild celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.
The victory sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will face co-host Canada with a place in the quarterfinals at stake. For the Netherlands, another promising World Cup campaign ended in bitter disappointment after failing to recover from Morocco’s late equalizer and falling in one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout matches.
