No. 9 Miami Rolls Past Stanford 42-7 Behind Dominant Second Half

Mark Fletcher Jr. leads Hurricanes with career-high three touchdowns as Miami’s defense stifles Stanford. The No. 9 Miami Hurricanes shook off a sluggish start and stormed past Stanford 42-7 on Saturday night, riding a bruising ground game and a dominant defensive effort to their biggest conference victory margin in nearly four years.

Mark Fletcher Jr. powered the Hurricanes (6-1, 2-1 ACC) with 106 rushing yards and a career-high three touchdowns, while quarterback Carson Beck bounced back from last week’s rough outing with an efficient performance — completing 21 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown to CJ Daniels.

Miami outgained Stanford 404-144, holding the Cardinal (3-5, 2-3) to just 25 total yards after their opening drive. The Hurricanes’ defense was airtight for most of the game, forcing two interceptions and completely shutting down Stanford’s offense over the final three quarters.

“It was a complete response game,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. “The defense set the tone after that first drive, and our offense found its rhythm and never looked back.”

Stanford actually struck first, marching 74 yards on the opening possession capped by a short touchdown pass from Ben Gulbranson. But the Cardinal’s momentum ended there — they led 7-0 after one quarter, then watched Miami methodically take control.

The Hurricanes tied it 7-7 before halftime, then exploded in the second half, scoring touchdowns on six of their next seven possessions. The only drive that didn’t end in points saw Miami stopped on a fourth-down try at the Stanford 21.

Fletcher’s trio of scores came on powerful inside runs, and freshmen Jordan Lyle and Girard Pringle Jr. added touchdown runs as Miami’s offensive line wore down Stanford’s front.

Malachi Toney provided a special teams spark with 138 all-purpose yards, including 73 on two long punt returns that helped flip field position in Miami’s favor.

The win marked Miami’s largest margin of victory in an ACC game since a 47-10 rout of Duke on Nov. 27, 2021.

For Stanford, Gulbranson started strong — completing five of his first six passes — but finished 4-for-15 with two interceptions and only 19 yards the rest of the way. Running back Cole Tabb was one of the few bright spots, rushing for 64 yards.

The second-half dominance flipped the script on a bit of football history. In 1984, Stanford’s interim coach Frank Reich — then the Maryland quarterback — engineered one of college football’s greatest comebacks by rallying his team from a 31-0 halftime deficit to beat Miami 42-40.

This time, it was the Hurricanes who did the rallying, outscoring the Cardinal 35-0 after halftime to seal a statement win.
