North West Wants to Work at Starbucks Next Year
North West may already be building a career in music, but the 13 year old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Ye has another goal that is considerably more ordinary: she wants a regular job at Starbucks.
In a new interview with Dazed published August 24, North was asked what she might do if she were not pursuing a career as an artist. The question also referenced her previous interest in basketball.
North made it clear that basketball is no longer the plan. Instead, she said she wants to work and specifically named Starbucks as the place where she would like to get a job when she turns 14.
“I still wanna work. I wanna work at, like, Starbucks next year,” North told Dazed. “I think I can next year ’cause I’m gonna be 14, so… I think I can.”
She then offered a remarkably straightforward explanation for the unusual career ambition given her family background.
“I want to have a regular job, I guess.”
North Wants a Taste of a Normal Teen Experience
North has grown up under an extraordinary level of public attention. Her parents are two of the most recognizable figures in entertainment, and she has already begun establishing her own identity in music.
Her desire to work a conventional job stands in sharp contrast to the celebrity world surrounding her. Rather than describing another entertainment venture or business opportunity, North said she wants the experience of having a normal job.
There is one important catch, however. North’s assumption that turning 14 will make her eligible to work at Starbucks may not match the company’s actual hiring requirements. The Independent reported that employees typically must be at least 16 at most Starbucks locations.
That means North may have to wait longer than she expects if Starbucks’ standard age requirement applies to the location where she hopes to work.
Music Remains North’s Main Ambition
The Starbucks goal does not mean North is walking away from music. In the same Dazed interview, she made clear that music remains something she takes seriously.
North has already released her debut six track EP, N0rth4evr, and has performed at major events, including her first solo festival appearance at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash in Illinois in June.
When asked about advice she has received regarding her career, North said the worst advice was being told to wait before getting started.
“To start my career later,” she said. “It’s like, nah, this is my hobby, this is what I like to do, this is what I wanna do with my life.”
She also described herself as someone who does not particularly enjoy sitting around doing nothing. North told Dazed that her ideal day would involve rehearsal, time in the studio or performing at a major show.
A Very Different Kind of Career Experience
North’s Starbucks ambitions offer an unusual glimpse into what she may want from her teenage years. While her entertainment career gives her opportunities most teenagers could not imagine, she appears interested in experiencing a workplace that is far removed from stages, recording studios and celebrity events.
Whether she ultimately becomes a Starbucks employee remains to be seen, particularly given the company’s age requirements. But for now, North has made one thing clear: alongside her ambitions in music, she wants the experience of having what she considers a regular job.
The revelation has also become one of the more unexpected details from North’s latest interview, showing that despite her increasingly public career, she is still thinking about some of the same everyday experiences as other teenagers.
