Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assault
British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week criminal trial in London. The 51-year-old entertainer was taken into custody after the verdict, with a judge warning that he faces a significant prison sentence.
The jury delivered its verdict on November 5, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court, finding Brand guilty of sexually assaulting four women in incidents connected to his entertainment career. The convictions involve offenses committed between 2004 and 2009. Brand, who previously denied all the allegations, was also acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. He is scheduled to return to court on November 9 for sentencing.
What Russell Brand Was Convicted Of
Following the four-week trial, the jury found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four different women. The allegations involved incidents dating back more than a decade, when Brand was becoming one of Britain’s most recognizable entertainers through television, radio, stand-up comedy and Hollywood films.
The four convictions involved the following incidents:
1. Rape in 2009: Brand was convicted of raping a woman he met after a stand-up performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. The woman told the court that she initially agreed to sex but that Brand continued after she asked him to stop.
2. Sexual Assault in 2004: Brand was convicted of sexually assaulting an MTV employee at a birthday party in London’s Soho neighborhood.
3. Sexual Assault in 2004 or 2005: Brand was convicted of kissing and groping a woman who worked for Choice FM at the Capital Radio building.
4. Sexual Assault in 2009: Brand was convicted of sexually assaulting a Channel 4 employee during a television production project.
The jury also considered allegations from two additional women. Brand was acquitted of two rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Brand Denied the Allegations
Throughout the criminal proceedings, Brand denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty. During his testimony, he acknowledged having a history of promiscuity and described his younger years as involving reckless sexual behavior. However, he maintained that he had never engaged in sexual activity without consent.
Brand argued that the encounters described by the complainants were consensual or had been misremembered or reinterpreted years later. The jury ultimately rejected parts of his defense and convicted him on four counts.
How the Investigation Began
The allegations against Brand first received widespread public attention in September 2023 following an investigation that detailed accusations from multiple women. Following the allegations, London’s Metropolitan Police launched an investigation and encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Investigators interviewed more than 100 witnesses, collected more than 400 witness statements and reviewed more than 1,400 documents. They also examined historical photographs, floor plans, television appearances, interviews and other material to establish timelines and assess the allegations. The investigation eventually led to criminal charges involving six women. The women who participated in the criminal proceedings are entitled to lifelong anonymity under British law.
Russell Brand Remains in Custody Ahead of Sentencing
Following the guilty verdicts, Brand was denied bail and remanded into custody. The judge indicated that the convictions would result in a significant custodial sentence, meaning Brand is facing prison time. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 9, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court. The exact length of his sentence has not yet been determined.
Police Investigating Additional Allegations
The criminal convictions are not the only legal challenges Brand is facing. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that investigations into two additional rape allegations involving separate women remain ongoing. Brand has previously been interviewed under caution in connection with those allegations. Authorities have also encouraged other potential victims or witnesses to contact investigators. These additional allegations remain under investigation and have not resulted in further convictions.
What Happens Next?
Brand is expected to appear in court on November 9 for sentencing. The hearing will determine the prison term associated with his four convictions. The case represents a major development in the yearslong investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving the former comedian and actor. For now, Brand remains in custody as he awaits sentencing, while police continue investigating the additional allegations.
