The Philadelphia Phillies survived a furious ninth-inning rally by the Miami Marlins to pull out a wild 11-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Trea Turner led the way with a four-hit performance, while Bryson Stott and Johan Rojas chipped in three hits apiece as the Phillies piled up 18 hits in the win.
Philadelphia appeared to be cruising after a seven-run outburst in the third and fourth innings put them ahead 7-1. Turner had run-scoring hits in both innings, including a sharp RBI single in the fourth. Bryson Stott followed with a two-run double, and the rout seemed to be on.
The Phillies built a 9-2 lead through six and added two more insurance runs in the seventh. It proved to be just enough.
The Marlins, who were outhit 18-15, exploded for six runs in the ninth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Dane Myers and a two-run shot by Liam Hicks — both off Phillies reliever Jordan Romano. Romano, enduring a rocky first season in Philadelphia, was booed off the mound after failing to record an out in the inning.
José Alvarado came on to record the final out and secure his fifth save, helping the NL East-leading Phillies hold on for their fourth win in five games.
“We’ll take the win, but obviously we’ve got to clean some things up late,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “Our offense was outstanding, and the bullpen did just enough.”
The Phillies won despite not hitting a home run, continuing to produce offensively without relying on the long ball. They now have 20 home runs on the season.
Taijuan Walker started but was pulled after four innings, allowing one run on three walks and 56 pitches. Thomson opted for the bullpen rather than pushing Walker deeper into the game. Matt Strahm (1-0) tossed a clean fifth inning to earn the win, with three other relievers bridging the gap to Alvarado.
For Miami, starter Cal Quantrill (1-2) was roughed up for seven runs in just 3 1/3 innings. Rookie Patrick Monteverde made his MLB debut in relief and gave up four runs over 3 2/3 innings as the Marlins’ pitching depth continues to be tested early in the season.
The game took a concerning turn for Miami in the sixth when left fielder Griffin Conine injured his left shoulder on a headfirst slide into second base following an RBI double. He was escorted off the field and his status moving forward is uncertain.
The Phillies’ 6-through-9 hitters combined for nine hits, underscoring the lineup depth that’s been a strength all season.
Philadelphia will look to complete the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Marlins will send right-hander Connor Gillispie (0-2, 6.63 ERA) to the mound to face Phillies lefty Jesús Luzardo (2-0, 2.31 ERA).
