Florida’s New Age Verification Law Sparks Surge in VPN Searches as Porn Websites Block Access

FLORIDA – Searches for “VPN” (Virtual Private Network) services surged across Florida on January 1, following the implementation of a new state law requiring age verification to access pornographic websites. The law, which took effect on January 1, mandates that websites hosting adult content must confirm that users are 18 years or older before granting access.

New Law and its Impact

Florida is the latest state to pass such legislation aimed at preventing minors from accessing adult content. House Bill 3, the legislation in question, imposes hefty fines of up to $50,000 per violation for websites that fail to enforce the age verification requirement. Similar laws also came into effect on the same day in Tennessee and South Carolina, bringing the total number of states enforcing such laws to 17.

The legislation has led several adult entertainment websites, including industry leader Pornhub, to block access to their sites from users in Florida. Those attempting to access the sites are greeted by a video featuring adult entertainment star Cherie DeVille, explaining the new requirement and voicing concerns over the risks to user privacy and security.

VPN Searches Surge

In response to the blockages, Floridians began searching for ways to bypass the age verification laws, with VPN usage becoming a popular solution. VPNs allow users to mask their location and potentially access websites that have been blocked in their region.

Google Trends data published on January 2 showed a sharp increase in VPN-related searches in Florida, with search interest reaching a value of 100 on January 2—up from a value of 91 on January 1. This indicates a significant rise in VPN interest following the implementation of the new law. Searches for VPN providers and related terms such as “Internet pornography” and “computer virus” also saw a notable spike in the state.

Adult Industry Reactions

Aylo, the parent company of Pornhub, issued a statement expressing concerns over the way age verification is being enforced in Florida. The company emphasized that while it supports age verification efforts, it believes the current approach could compromise user safety and privacy. Aylo warned that collecting large amounts of sensitive personal information to verify users’ ages could expose individuals to potential security risks.

“Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy,” Aylo stated. The company also expressed concern that users would likely turn to non-compliant websites or other methods to evade the laws.

Alternative Solutions

Some have proposed alternatives to the strict age verification requirements. In an article for the Palm Beach Post, columnist Frank Cerabino suggested that instead of demanding identification documents, websites could use age screening questions to assess whether a visitor is over 18 in a less intrusive manner.

The Broader Debate

The new law has sparked a wider debate about the balance between protecting children from adult content and safeguarding privacy rights. Supporters of the legislation argue that it is a necessary step to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate material, while critics, including privacy advocates and adult industry representatives, warn that it may put users’ personal information at risk and lead to unintended consequences, such as driving people to more extreme content.

Other states are expected to follow Florida’s lead. Georgia, for example, is set to implement similar legislation in July, making it the 18th state to require age verification for adult content websites.

As the debate continues, lawmakers, industry leaders, and privacy advocates remain divided on the best approach to balance child safety with individual rights in the digital age.
