Thompson’s Tip-In at the Buzzer Lifts Rockets Past Heat 123–122 as Durant Passes Jordan on Scoring List

The Houston Rockets pulled off a dramatic finish Saturday night, edging the Miami Heat 123–122 on a buzzer-beating tip-in by Amen Thompson while Kevin Durant added another milestone to his legendary résumé by moving past Michael Jordan for fifth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Durant scored 27 points in the win and now has 32,294 career points—two more than Jordan—marking another historic achievement in his Hall of Fame-caliber career. But the final moment belonged to Thompson.

With the Rockets trailing 122–121 in the closing seconds, Durant’s driving attempt for the win bounced off the rim. Thompson soared in traffic and tipped the ball in as time expired, sending Houston to a thrilling victory and capping a wild final sequence.

Miami appeared poised to escape with the win late. After trailing by eight, the Heat closed the gap with a 9–2 run, highlighted by a clutch 3-pointer from Simone Fontecchio to make it 119–118 with 46.3 seconds remaining.

Houston responded when Reed Sheppard scored in the lane with 12.7 seconds left to push the Rockets ahead 121–118. But the Heat answered again as Bam Adebayo knocked down two free throws before Fontecchio drove for a layup that was ruled goaltending on Jabari Smith Jr., giving Miami a 122–121 lead with just 5.4 seconds remaining and setting up Houston’s dramatic finish.

Adebayo delivered another standout performance despite the loss, finishing with 32 points and tying a career high with 21 rebounds. The big night followed his historic 83-point outing against Washington on March 10 and underscored his dominant stretch of play. Still, the defeat marked Miami’s fourth straight setback.

Durant’s milestone moment came earlier in the fourth quarter when he drained consecutive 3-pointers to turn a two-point Houston lead into a 117–109 advantage. His second triple pushed him past Jordan on the all-time scoring list, and he briefly raised his arms in celebration as the crowd acknowledged the achievement.

The Rockets had to rally to get there. Miami built an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter before Houston erupted with a decisive 15–0 run. Smith and Sheppard each knocked down key 3-pointers during the surge, while Aaron Holiday added another from deep as the Rockets grabbed a 106–102 advantage with under seven minutes to play.

Fontecchio snapped a four-minute scoring drought for Miami soon after, but Holiday answered seconds later with another 3-pointer to keep Houston ahead 109–105 midway through the quarter and set the stage for the frantic finish.

The Heat visit San Antonio Spurs on Monday night, while the Rockets begin a four-game road trip against the Chicago Bulls the same evening.
