Vernell Brown III Leads Florida’s Rout of Campbell as Gators Start 2-0

Gators Win Big 52-3 on Saturday

Vernell Brown III went from a freshman without a touchdown to the centerpiece of one of Florida’s most explosive performances in recent memory.

Brown scored three touchdowns in a decisive second quarter, including consecutive punt-return touchdowns, as Florida overwhelmed lower-division Campbell 52-3 on Saturday in front of a sold-out Swamp. The victory moved the Gators to 2-0 for the first time since 2021 and gave them plenty of momentum heading into Southeastern Conference play.

Brown Turns Special Teams Into a Highlight Reel

Brown failed to find the end zone as a freshman last season as a receiver, rusher or punt returner. The sophomore from Tampa made up for that drought in spectacular fashion, finishing with a career-high 262 all-purpose yards. Brown became the first Florida player since Jacquez Green in 1996 to return two punts for touchdowns in the same game. Green also accomplished the feat on consecutive returns.

Brown’s first punt return covered 64 yards. He ducked under one would-be tackler, juked another and slipped through a hole before accelerating into the open field. With no defenders close behind him, Brown was able to slow down and high-five teammate Bailey Stockton near the 5-yard line before crossing the goal line.

The touchdown was Florida’s first punt return for a score since Kadarius Toney returned one against Kentucky in 2020. Brown wasn’t finished. His second touchdown return covered 70 yards as he initially headed up the middle, cut toward the right side and raced down the sideline into the end zone.

Campbell continued kicking to Brown, and the decision nearly resulted in even more damage. Brown had a 48-yard return negated by a penalty before adding another 37-yard return. He finished with 219 yards on four punt returns and added three receptions for 43 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown on a shovel pass that gave Florida a 38-3 advantage.

Gators Explode for 35 Points in Second Quarter

Brown was hardly Florida’s only standout. Running back Jadan Baugh rushed 14 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long 75-yard scoring run. Quarterback Aaron Philo completed 16 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score.

Wide receiver Dallas Wilson added five receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown as Florida repeatedly found openings against Campbell’s defense. The Gators turned the game into a rout with 35 points in the second quarter and carried a 45-3 lead into halftime.

Florida’s offense slowed considerably after the break, managing 198 yards across six second-half possessions. The Gators ended two of those drives with a turnover on downs and an interception, but the outcome had long been decided.

Campbell Struggles to Keep Pace

Campbell dropped to 2-1 after struggling to generate offense against the Gators. Quarterback Kamden Sixkiller completed 16 of 30 passes for 127 yards before giving way to Grayson Harvey. Sixkiller was also sacked twice as Florida’s defense consistently disrupted the Camels’ offense.

Campbell managed just three points, with Florida controlling the game from the opening quarter and never allowing the Camels to mount a serious threat. For the Gators, the 52-3 victory provided exactly the kind of dominant performance expected against an overmatched opponent. Brown’s record-setting night, however, made the victory particularly memorable.

Florida Turns Attention to SEC Play

Florida now turns its attention to the Southeastern Conference. The Gators travel to Auburn next Saturday for their first SEC game of the season. The matchup will provide a significantly tougher test after Florida used Campbell as its final tuneup before conference play.

Brown’s emergence could give Florida another dangerous weapon heading into the heart of its schedule. After going without a touchdown as a freshman, he scored three in one game and established himself as one of the Gators’ most explosive playmakers. Campbell, meanwhile, returns home next Saturday to host North Carolina A&T.
