UGA Student Survives Terrifying Eight-Story Fall From Apartment Window in Athens

A 21 year old University of Georgia student is recovering in intensive care after surviving a terrifying fall from the eighth floor of an apartment building in Athens, Georgia, over the weekend.

Kristin Sargent, a UGA senior studying finance and marketing, fell from a window at the Rambler Athens apartment complex on West Broad Street on Saturday evening, September 26. According to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department incident report, officers, firefighters and emergency personnel were dispatched to the complex at approximately 7:37 p.m. after receiving a report of a person who had fallen from an upper floor. What initially appeared to be a potentially fatal accident has instead become a remarkable survival story.

The Eight Story Fall

According to witnesses interviewed by police, Sargent had been dancing on a couch or air mattress positioned near an open window in her apartment. Investigators were told that she apparently went through the window’s screen and fell approximately eight stories into the courtyard below.

The Rambler is constructed around a central courtyard and pool area. Because of the building’s design, the pool deck where Sargent landed is located on what police described as the second floor of the building. When officers arrived, they found Sargent on the ground near the pool.

Investigators found evidence suggesting that she may have struck a metal bench during the fall. The police report noted that the bench cushion had blood on it and that an armrest had broken off. Witnesses also reportedly indicated that a lounge chair may have helped break Sargent’s fall before she struck the bench and ultimately reached the ground. The precise sequence of impacts is still being investigated.

Police Say the Fall Appears to Have Been an Accident

Perhaps one of the most important details in the police report is that investigators have not described the incident as an intentional act. Officer Erik Ellison wrote that the information gathered from witnesses and the scene thus far indicated that the fall was an accident. Police continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

There is currently no indication in the reporting that Sargent was pushed or that another person caused her to fall. That distinction is important because some early social-media discussion surrounding the incident raised questions about what happened at the apartment. The police investigation, however, has so far pointed toward an accidental fall.

 How She Survived

Sargent was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Initial reports said she was conscious and alert despite the severity of the fall. Her father, Richard Sargent, later told WSB-TV that his daughter was awake, talking and recovering in intensive care. The family traveled from Virginia to Athens after receiving the alarming news.

Richard Sargent described his daughter as having suffered multiple injuries and several broken bones, but said doctors and the family were encouraged by her condition. He also said Kristin understands just how extraordinary her survival was. According to her father, she spoke with a friend and said, “Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it.” Her father described her as a fighter and expressed confidence that she would continue recovering.

The Timing of the Accident

The accident occurred shortly after the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 41-13. Sargent’s father noted that the victory had created a celebratory atmosphere around the University of Georgia campus and Athens that evening.

He did not speculate publicly about exactly what caused his daughter to lose her balance. Police have likewise not attributed the fall to anything beyond what witnesses reported about her being near the open window. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m., according to police records and subsequent reporting.

Questions About the Apartment Window

The accident has also raised questions about the windows at the Rambler Athens complex. Following the incident, apartment management sent a message to residents reminding them that the building’s windows are equipped with safety limiters.

Management specifically warned residents not to tamper with, remove or disengage those devices and instructed residents with concerns about a window or safety limiter to contact management. However, authorities have not established publicly whether the safety limiter on the particular window involved in Sargent’s fall was engaged, functioning properly or had anything to do with the accident.

That remains an important part of the investigation. The apartment complex has said it is cooperating with authorities and gathering information about what happened. Management has also asked residents to respect Sargent’s privacy while she and her family deal with her recovery.

A Community Rallies Around Her

News of Sargent’s survival has spread throughout the UGA community, where students and friends have expressed concern and support for the young woman and her family. Inside the apartment complex, a poster has reportedly been filled with messages of encouragement from friends and fellow students.

Her father said the family has been overwhelmed by the support coming from the University of Georgia community and medical personnel treating his daughter. For a family that received a phone call telling them their daughter had suffered a “tough fall,” the fact that she is now awake and communicating represents an extraordinary turn of events.

The Investigation Continues

Despite the remarkable outcome, the investigation is not over. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fall, including witness accounts, the apartment window, the screen, the safety equipment and physical evidence in the courtyard. Investigators have not publicly determined exactly how Sargent went through the window or whether anything involving the window’s safety limiter contributed to the incident.

What is known is that she fell from an eighth-floor apartment, landed in the courtyard below and survived with serious injuries. For now, the focus has shifted away from the investigation and toward recovery. Sargent remains hospitalized and is expected to face a significant recovery from her injuries.
