Agustín Ramírez had a night to remember on Wednesday, delivering the first four-hit game of his career to help lift the Miami Marlins to a 10-8 comeback win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
Ramírez went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored, including a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning that capped off a dramatic turnaround for the Marlins, who rallied from a 6-1 deficit to snap the Padres’ momentum from the previous night.
“I just tried to stay within myself and make good contact,” said Ramírez, who debuted in April and has quickly become a key contributor. The 24-year-old is now hitting .262 with seven home runs and 17 RBI in his first big-league season.
The Marlins offense surged behind Ramírez’s breakout performance. Eric Wagaman and Otto Lopez each collected three hits, with Lopez launching a three-run homer during Miami’s pivotal five-run fifth inning that chased Padres starter Kyle Hart from the game. Javier Sanoja added two doubles to round out the attack.
Despite a rocky outing from ace Sandy Alcantara—who lasted just four innings and gave up six runs—Miami’s bullpen held together. Ronny Henriquez (3-1) earned the win with two solid innings of relief, and Calvin Faucher closed the door in the ninth to pick up his third save.
The Padres had their own offensive bursts. Gavin Sheets, who drove in three runs, gave San Diego an 8-7 lead with a two-run homer in the seventh. But reliever Jason Adam (5-1) took the loss after allowing Miami’s late rally in the eighth.
A tense moment came in that eighth inning when Miami’s Connor Norby was hit in the helmet by an 87 mph changeup from Adam. Norby remained on the ground briefly but was able to stay in the game.
After Ramírez’s go-ahead single made it 9-8, Wagaman doubled in Victor Mesa Jr. to give the Marlins some breathing room. Ramírez tried to score from first on the play but was thrown out at home.
The victory comes just one day after the Padres rallied from six runs down to beat the Marlins, but Miami flipped the script this time, taking advantage of a Padres bullpen that couldn’t protect a late lead.
Agustín Ramírez, who made his MLB debut on April 21, now has seven homers and 17 RBI while batting .262.
The Marlins return to Miami to host the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Cal Quantrill (3-4, 6.09 ERA) will face Kyle Henderson (0-1, 3.86 ERA).
The Padres head home to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates with Nick Pivetta (5-2, 2.72 ERA) set to square off against Mitch Keller (1-6, 3.66 ERA).
