Substitute Amad Diallo emerged as the hero for Ivory Coast, scoring a dramatic 90th-minute winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in an entertaining Group E opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a match filled with chances, near misses, and relentless attacking football from both sides, it was the Manchester United forward who finally broke the deadlock at the death, handing the African champions three valuable points in front of a lively crowd in Philadelphia.
The contest was one of the most entertaining fixtures of the opening round of group-stage matches, with Ecuador striking the woodwork three times and Ivory Coast also rattling the crossbar before Diallo’s decisive intervention.
Ecuador looked the more dangerous side during an action-packed first half. Veteran striker Enner Valencia squandered a golden opportunity after an unfortunate slip from defender Emmanuel Agbadou gifted him space inside the penalty area, only for the Ecuador captain to fire over the bar.
The South Americans continued to threaten. John Yeboah came inches away from opening the scoring when he unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box that crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Alan Minda nearly put Ecuador ahead after latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Pedro Vite, but his effort also struck the woodwork.
Ivory Coast had their own moments of promise, largely through the exciting play of 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande. The youngster repeatedly caused problems down the right flank with his pace and direct running. However, the Elephants struggled to convert his dangerous deliveries into clear-cut chances.
Nicholas Pepê hesitated too long when presented with one opportunity, while another attempt ended in frustration when his shot struck teammate Elye Wahi inside the penalty area.
The second half resumed with Ecuador once again threatening first. Valencia combined neatly with Gonzalo Plata before striking the outside of the post, continuing a frustrating evening for the South American attack.
As the match progressed, Ivory Coast began to seize control and create the better opportunities. Diomande remained at the heart of nearly everything positive for the African side, twice breaking into dangerous positions only to fire his efforts high over the crossbar.
The youngster then produced a superb cross that nearly resulted in the opening goal, but Wahi’s touch diverted the ball onto the crossbar instead.
Ecuador remained dangerous on the counterattack. Plata forced a solid save from goalkeeper Yahia Fofana with a long-range effort, while defender Joel Ordóñez headed over from a promising free-kick situation.
With the game appearing destined for a scoreless draw, Ivory Coast delivered one final attack.
In the 90th minute, defender Wilfried Singo surged forward on a powerful run down the right side before delivering a dangerous ball into the area. The move eventually fell to Diallo on the edge of the box, and the substitute showed remarkable composure, guiding a precise low shot inside the post and beyond the reach of Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez.
The late strike sparked wild celebrations among the Ivory Coast players and supporters as Diallo’s goal secured all three points in dramatic fashion.
The victory places Ivory Coast in a strong early position in Group E and continues the momentum generated by their recent rise among Africa’s elite teams. For Ecuador, the defeat will be particularly painful after creating numerous chances and hitting the woodwork on three occasions without finding a breakthrough.
Despite the loss, Ecuador’s attacking display offered plenty of encouragement heading into their remaining group matches, while Ivory Coast will take confidence from their resilience and ability to capitalize when it mattered most.
Ivory Coast now moves forward with momentum and a crucial opening victory, while Ecuador will be left wondering how a match they controlled for long stretches slipped away in the final moments.
