Antonelli Outduels Norris in Miami Thriller to Claim Third Straight Win and Extend Championship Lead

The 2026 Miami Grand Prix delivered another high-drama chapter in the Formula 1 title fight, as 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli produced a composed, strategic masterclass to beat Lando Norris and claim his third consecutive Grand Prix victory. In a race shaped by weather uncertainty, early chaos, and split-second pit strategy, Antonelli emerged on top once again tightening his grip on the championship lead.

Antonelli’s win was anything but straightforward. The Italian, driving for Mercedes, had to withstand relentless pressure from Lando Norris, who looked increasingly threatening as the race unfolded in changing conditions around Miami Gardens. But the decisive moment came during the pit-stop phase, where Antonelli executed a perfectly timed stop to undercut Norris and take control of the race at just the right time.

From there, Antonelli showed maturity beyond his years. Despite Norris closing in during the final stint, the Mercedes driver managed the gap expertly to secure victory and extend his championship lead to 20 points over teammate George Russell, who recovered to finish fourth after a difficult weekend.

Behind the leaders, the race was shaped early by chaos. A dramatic opening lap saw multiple front-runners battling three-wide into Turn 1, with Max Verstappen suffering a costly spin that dropped him deep into the field. From there, the reigning champion could only recover to fifth after attempting an aggressive strategy that ultimately failed to pay off.

Further back, McLaren’s pace was once again strong. Oscar Piastri brought home third after capitalizing on late-race errors from others, continuing his strong 2026 campaign. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also featured prominently before a late spin and subsequent penalty dropped him to eighth, behind seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who finished seventh.

The race itself was heavily influenced by weather warnings, with F1 officials moving the start forward by three hours to avoid forecast thunderstorms. Early conditions were dry but unpredictable, with a lingering 40% rain threat forcing teams into constant strategic uncertainty.

Drama escalated quickly. Rookie Isack Hadjar crashed out early, triggering a safety car, while a frightening incident involving Pierre Gasly saw his Alpine briefly go airborne after contact with Liam Lawson though Gasly thankfully emerged unharmed.

After the restart, Norris seized control briefly, showing the pace that has made McLaren’s upgrade package a genuine title contender. He overtook Leclerc and built a lead, but Antonelli’s racecraft and pit strategy kept him within striking distance.

The turning point came around the pit window. Antonelli stopped a lap earlier than Norris, gaining crucial time on fresh tires. As Norris rejoined, he found himself behind the Mercedes driver, unable to close the gap despite late-race pressure.

From there, Antonelli never looked back.

As the field settled, Verstappen’s early damage and strategy gamble saw him fall behind both McLarens and Ferraris on track. A late push briefly brought him back into contention for points, but tire degradation left him vulnerable in the closing stages.

Russell’s recovery drive added late intrigue as he battled through setup issues and fought his way past Leclerc and Verstappen in the final laps to secure fourth, salvaging strong points for Mercedes alongside Antonelli’s win.

By the time the checkered flag fell, Antonelli had once again proved himself the driver to beat in 2026. Three straight victories China, Japan, and now Miami have transformed him from rising star into full championship contender.

With momentum firmly on his side and McLaren and Red Bull increasingly under pressure, the Formula 1 title fight has taken a decisive turn—and Kimi Antonelli is now firmly in control.
