Athletes of all ages are put through physical altercations on a daily basis. In order to continue performing day after day, they are taught to live with the pain. Aches, inflammation, strains and soreness just touch the base of what these players must deal with. Traditional pain relief options lead to your standard over the counter NSAIDS (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen that deals with headaches, colds, flu and arthritis. If these do not do the trick, the next step would be prescribed opioids. These are a much stronger version of pain killers that have much greater side effects.

Alternatives to these traditional medicines have been long attempted. From physical therapy and rehabilitation to yoga and CBD (cannabidiol). CBD provides numerous beneficial effects that could interest athletes of all kinds. Its apparent why professional athletes would be interested in CBD. Any situation where some type of relief or pain management alternative is an option, you better believe they’re interested.

Beneficial Effects of CBD

After the Farm Bill legislation in December of last year, CBD has become increasingly popular. Legal CBD is a cannabis-derived compound from the hemp plant. This derivative must maintain a percentage of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) less than .3%. Much more research has surfaced over the following months to provide data in favor of the effects of CBD. Fortunately, this has not gone unnoticed by plenty of people. A few of the effects that have been announced are:

There are more than enough claims to support the idea of CBD being a positive benefactor in treatments of a multitude of things. Nonetheless, the interest of professional athletes obviously comes to mind when comparing their daily experiences in their field to these benefits. Many players have already began investing their time and some even money in the new CBD wave.

Investing Athletes

There many athletes that have now gotten into the investing game when it comes to CBD. They all see the potential for this cannabis-derived product. Some of these people have even opened their own brand!

Jake Plummer, Ex – NFL Quarterback for the Broncos

Jake Plummer is one of many people behind the Cannabis trend. He is actually a leading advocate. Along with Eugene Monroe, Ex – NFL Offensive Tackle for the Ravens and Derrick Morgan, Ex – NFL Linebacker for the Titans. These individuals plan to reform the NFL’s standards on all thing’s cannabis. They hope that in doing so, they will accept it and eventually help with medical research in order to find if medical cannabis can be used as a neuroprotectant. A neuroprotectant is a substance that can protect and hopefully even repair a damaged brain. These are very respectable goals. I hope their crusade continues forward. Jake Plummer also has a video on YouTube supporting the campaign,

Joe Montana, Hall of Fame NFL Player

Joe Montana is a name that any fan of the NFL knows. This man is a legend among legends. He is part of a $75 Million investment in the San Jose, California cannabis company Caliva. This company also just had Jay-Z partner up with them as of this week. Joe Montana stands by his beliefs that cannabis has the capabilities to provide relief for many people. Also, there are chances that it could make a serious impact on opioid use or addiction.

Jim McMahon, Two Time Super Bowl Winning Quarterback

Jim McMahon, yet another great, also has strong feelings towards the cannabis movement. In his 15-year professional career he was physically punished over and over. Now plagued with physical problems and haunted by the countless concussions. He is diagnosed with early stage onset dementia. Also suffers from a variety of problems while dealing with lingering pain of a broken neck. This man was beaten over and over and to this day, he supports the marijuana movement. He used medical marijuana to get off painkillers and narcotics.

“They were doing more harm than good,” referring to the painkillers and narcotics.

“This medical marijuana has been a godsend. It relieves me of the pain — or thinking about it, anyway.”

He also has a video on YouTube supporting his claims.

Cliff Robinson, Ex – NBA Trail Blazer Superstar

Not only NFL players are involved. Ex Trail Blazer Cliff Robinson is right on the cannabis bandwagon as wall. He actually has his own line of products. Uncle Cliffy is his brand name for cannabis related products. This particular athlete not only saw the benefit of cannabis-derived compounds, but he has his fingers in the pot. His personal stance according to the Uncle Cliffy website is:

“Cliff Robinson suffered multiple injuries during his professional basketball career, but still maintains an active lifestyle. Cliff credits cannabis as a major reason why he has been able to successfully treat the aches and pains that he now endures in retirement. As a longtime consumer, Cliff Robinson knows first hand how well cannabis works for medical and wellness purposes, and it’s that very first hand experience that fuels his passion for cannabis advocacy.”

He too knows the benefits that cannabis can have on the body in a positive manner. In claiming that “cannabis was a major reason why he has been able to successfully treat the aches and pains,” Robinson is literally crediting that positive effects are indeed true.

Scott McCarron – American Professional Golfer

Did you know that professional golfers have interest in CBD? CBD has previous known benefits with arthritis pains and sleep aid. Scott McCarron knows this all too well because he himself is an enthusiast and user of CBD. He uses it as said for sleep and pain. However, McCarron also claims that it is aiding his recovery because of all the actual high grades of sleep he is receiving.

“I went and tried it about two weeks later when I went home. I measure my sleep with a device called WHOOP,” said McCarron “That’s a sleep and strain device. Major League Baseball, NFL and Olympic athletes use the device. For the first time in about two years that I’d been wearing the device, I was taking the CBD oil, started on Monday and had sleep in the green, which is fantastic sleep, for seven days straight the first time I took this CBD oil at night to help me sleep.”

“I feel like I can play longer, I can practice longer, play week in and week out and not have that soreness that you might have to take a week off because your body needs recovery,”

“Because the CBD is helping my sleep, it’s helping my body recover faster and better every night so that I feel good and then I can go ahead and play and perform at a high level.”

As you can see CBD is helping a wide variety of athletes. But as of two months ago, one of the biggest contributors to the CBD wellness growth process has begun.

UFC Partners with Aurora Cannabis Inc.

The entire UFC is partnering with Aurora Cannabis to test the potential benefits of CBD. They are trying to enhance the level of CBD research. UFC fighters are truly the athletes that take the most physical abuse there is. These fighters are trying their utmost to have their bodies in the healthiest and physically endured shape of their lives. Each and every night they go out to compete, they are put under enough physical strain that could kill someone not prepared. Coming straight from the UFC website:

“the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization, are excited to announce an exclusive, multi-year, multi-million dollar, global partnership that is expected to significantly advance further clinical research on the relationship between 100% hemp derived Cannabidiol (CBD) products and athlete wellness and recovery, with a view to accelerating CBD product development and education.”

This is going to be astronomically more evidence to support the fact that CBD is indeed a beneficial cannabis-derived compound. Incredible news for CBD all around the world. Ideally, this partnership is able to show clinical data to support CBD towards pain, inflammation or serious problems like nerve damage to these fighters.

What Else do you Need to Know?

Cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds are making their way through the market and the medical field like never before. There has been an explosion of interest in the past year and with good reason. Enough medical professionals have had solid research to make people believe that these compounds are indeed a consideration for a multitude of problems. Not just that, but there is evidence from so many different types of professional athletes that it’s hard to even doubt it. With these superstars taking these compounds, backing these products, and supporting the expansion of Cannabis, you better believe that a new sun is on the horizon for CBD. Only clinical research with a ton of supported evidence is going to finalize the legality and use of treatment of all cannabis and their derived compounds. Nevertheless, with all this backing from sports superstars and legends, as well as the entirety of the UFC, CBD is a sought-after product.
