The Kansas City Chiefs added yet another thrilling chapter to their ongoing 15-game win streak by narrowly escaping with a 16-14 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday. In a dramatic finish, linebacker Leo Chenal led a last-second surge to block Wil Lutz’s 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired, sealing the Chiefs’ undefeated record and showcasing their ability to win in almost every conceivable way.
The Chiefs‘ winning streak, which stretches back to last season, has included heroics from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, defensive stands, and game-winning field goals by Harrison Butker. Sunday’s game brought something new to the mix: a walk-off field goal block. According to head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs had seen something in Denver’s field goal setup that tipped them off, allowing Chenal and the Kansas City defensive line to exploit a weakness right up the middle.
The game had been tense from start to finish, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. After Butker’s go-ahead field goal with just under six minutes remaining, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix orchestrated a comeback drive. Nix converted three crucial third downs, including a 13-yard completion to Courtland Sutton on third-and-6 with only 1:45 left, setting up Lutz for what seemed to be a sure-fire game-winner.
But with the game on the line, Chenal broke through the Broncos‘ field-goal unit, got his hand on the kick, and sent the ball skittering off toward the Denver sideline. The Chiefs‘ bench erupted as players stormed the field to celebrate another victory in what’s become a storied season.
Mahomes turned in another solid performance, completing 266 yards through the air with one touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce, who finished with eight catches for 64 yards. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins chipped in with four catches for 56 yards, while running back Kareem Hunt was held to just 35 rushing yards but contributed 65 receiving yards on seven catches.
On the Broncos‘ side, Nix threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns, keeping Denver in striking distance all afternoon. Sutton was his primary target, hauling in six passes for 60 yards, including the critical third-down conversion that set up Lutz’s ill-fated attempt.
With the win, the Chiefs move on to a highly anticipated matchup against the Buffalo Bills next week, while the Broncos, now 5-5, will try to regroup as they prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons.
