Chiefs Dominate Commanders 28-7 Behind Mahomes, Hunt, and Suffocating Defense

The Kansas City Chiefs rediscovered their championship swagger on Monday Night Football, storming past the Washington Commanders 28-7 at Arrowhead Stadium in a cold, blustery Week 8 showdown. Patrick Mahomes threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns — overcoming two early interceptions — while Kareem Hunt found the end zone twice as Kansas City (5-3) pulled away in the second half for its fourth win in five games.

The Chiefs’ defense matched the intensity of Mahomes and company, pitching a second-half shutout and forcing Washington’s offense into a series of mistakes that doomed any hopes of an upset. The victory also extended Kansas City’s dominance over Washington to nine straight wins and 11 of the past 12 meetings, the lone loss coming way back in 1983.

For much of the first half, it looked as if both offenses were stuck in neutral. Mahomes tossed two interceptions — one off Travis Kelce’s hands — before finding his rhythm. From that point forward, he was nearly flawless, completing pass after pass against a Commanders defense that couldn’t keep up.

Mahomes’ three touchdown passes went to Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Kareem Hunt, and his efficiency over the final two quarters turned a sloppy game into a statement victory.

Kelce’s touchdown — a short strike in the third quarter — gave him 83 career touchdown receptions, tying Priest Holmes for the franchise record. The 36-year-old tight end finished with six catches for 68 yards.

Wideout Rashee Rice made the most of his second game back from a six-game NFL suspension, catching nine passes for 93 yards and the clinching 18-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Hunt, meanwhile, powered the run game with two red-zone scores, including a bruising plunge that capped an 80-yard opening drive of the second half to put Kansas City up 14-7.

That touchdown flipped the momentum for good. The Chiefs’ offense would not be stopped again, and their defense ensured Washington never had a chance to respond.

Washington (3-5) entered the game already behind the eight ball with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Veteran Marcus Mariota got the start and threw for 213 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, but his inconsistency stalled multiple drives.

His lone touchdown came on a 16-yard strike to Terry McLaurin, who returned from a quad injury and caught three passes for 54 yards before aggravating the same leg late in the fourth quarter. Deebo Samuel, also returning from a bruised heel, had just three catches after a fast start.

Washington’s opening drive set the tone: Mariota’s pass deflected off Samuel and into the hands of a Chiefs defender. Two drives later, Mahomes returned the favor with an interception of his own. The first half was littered with mistakes — two interceptions per team and two failed fourth-down attempts by the Commanders — before both sides finally exchanged touchdowns to enter halftime tied 7-7.

The second half belonged entirely to Kansas City. Hunt’s second touchdown gave the Chiefs the lead for good, Kelce’s record-tying score extended it, and Rice’s fourth-quarter grab on a grueling 13-play, 94-yard drive sealed the deal.

That march — which actually spanned 119 total yards thanks to penalties — embodied the Chiefs’ resilience. Even when backed up, Mahomes kept his composure and found his playmakers.

Kansas City has now scored at least 28 points in five straight games, finding offensive balance and rhythm at the right time after a shaky start to the season. With the win, they move to 5-3 and stay in the thick of the AFC playoff race.

The Commanders, meanwhile, fall to 3-5 and 1-4 on the road, continuing a frustrating stretch that’s seen them drop four of their last five.

Commanders: Host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football. Chiefs: Travel to Buffalo for an AFC Championship rematch with the Bills.
