The road to the Kentucky Derby took a significant turn Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where Commandment proved both his class and versatility with a hard-fought victory in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes.
Trained by Brad Cox, the 2-1 favorite overcame a stern late challenge from Chief Wallabee to win by a neck in the 80th running of the $425,000 prep race. The 1 1/16-mile contest, a key stop on the Derby trail, awarded Commandment 50 qualifying points toward a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May.
Facing a field of nine 3-year-olds, Commandment answered the biggest question surrounding his development—whether he could handle two turns. After a dominant 6 3/4-length victory in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at one mile in January, Saturday’s performance confirmed his ability to stretch out successfully.
Commandment settled comfortably in fifth early as long shot Rockies Balboa set the pace through fractions of 23.16 and 46.89 seconds. Ahead of him, the previously unbeaten trio of Solitude Dude, Napoleon Solo, and Jackson Hole tracked the early leader.
As the field approached the far turn, Rockies Balboa began to fade, and Solitude Dude surged to the front under Flavien Prat. Meanwhile, Commandment and Chief Wallabee advanced in tandem, setting the stage for a dramatic stretch duel.
Turning for home, Irad Ortiz Jr. guided Commandment along the rail, while Chief Wallabee, ridden by Junior Alvarado, swung three wide into contention. Commandment seized a narrow advantage in mid-stretch, but Chief Wallabee quickly drew alongside, testing the favorite’s resolve.
In the final strides, Commandment dug in, using his experience edge to hold off the lightly raced challenger and secure his third win in four career starts. He stopped the clock in 1:43.33 for the distance.
Chief Wallabee, making just his second career start, impressed in defeat. The homebred trained by Bill Mott showed poise and determination, suggesting a bright future as the distances increase.
Solitude Dude, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., finished third, two lengths behind the top pair, suffering his first loss after three consecutive wins. He crossed the wire well ahead of stablemate Bravaro, who finished fourth.
With the victory, Commandment stamped himself as a leading contender for the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream one of the most important final preps for the Kentucky Derby. Cox indicated the next step is still under consideration, with options including the Florida Derby or the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.
As the Derby trail intensifies, Commandment’s combination of tactical speed, resilience, and proven ability around two turns makes him a colt to watch in the weeks ahead.
