Compton Man Mauled to Death by Dogs in Suspected Breeding Operation
COMPTON, CA — A 35-year-old man was found dead in the backyard of his Compton home Friday morning after being mauled by several dogs, authorities said. The victim, identified as Dominic Cooper, may have been breeding pit bulls at the residence, according to investigators.
The Compton Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 8 a.m. from a woman who reported that her boyfriend had been injured in a backyard dog kennel. When authorities arrived at the intersection of North Thorson Avenue and East Saunders Street, they discovered Cooper’s body.
Details of the Incident
Investigators believe the attack occurred the previous evening, around 7:30 or 8 p.m., while Cooper was feeding the dogs. Surveillance footage reportedly captured parts of the incident, which showed the dogs fighting before turning on Cooper.
A total of 13 dogs were found at the property, including five adult pit bulls and eight puppies aged four to six months. Several kennels were also present in the backyard. While officials have not confirmed Cooper was actively breeding the dogs, they indicated the setup was consistent with such an operation.
Animal Control and Investigation
Los Angeles County Animal Control officers removed all 13 dogs from the property, transporting them to the Downey Animal Care Center for evaluation and impoundment. It remains unclear whether any of the dogs involved in the attack will be euthanized.
Marcia Mayeda, Director of the Department of Animal Care and Control, expressed condolences, stating, “Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family and friends of the victim. We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to determine the facts and ensure the safety and well-being of both the community and the animals involved.”
Cause of Death
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has listed Cooper’s cause of death as “deferred” pending further investigation.

Investigators revealed that at least two nearby homes are suspected of breeding pit bulls, though no additional incidents have been reported.
