Costco Salmon Recalled For Listeria Risk Elevated To Highest Risk Level, FDA Says

FDA Updates Recall on Salmon Sold at Costco

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an update on a recall involving salmon sold at Costco, citing potential health risks linked to the product. The recall, originally announced last week, has now been expanded to include additional lot numbers and states where the affected salmon was distributed.

The Issue

According to the FDA, the recall involves pre-packaged fresh Atlantic salmon that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness in individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and the elderly. While no illnesses have been reported to date, the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure after routine testing revealed traces of the bacteria in several samples.

Product Details

The affected salmon was sold under the “Kirkland Signature” brand at Costco locations nationwide. The FDA’s update now includes the following lot numbers:

  • Lot #2219A
  • Lot #2231B
  • Lot #2247C

Consumers are urged to check their packages for these lot numbers, which can be found on the product label. The salmon was sold between January 10 and January 25, 2025, and may have been purchased fresh or frozen.

FDA Recommendations

The FDA advises anyone who purchased the affected salmon to immediately stop using the product and return it to their local Costco for a full refund. Customers who have already consumed the product should monitor themselves for symptoms of Listeria infection, which can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea.

“We’re committed to ensuring the safety of our food supply,” said an FDA spokesperson in a statement. “We’re working closely with Costco and the supplier to address this issue and prevent future occurrences.”

Costco’s Response

Costco has proactively reached out to customers who purchased the affected salmon, using its membership database to notify them of the recall. The company has also removed the product from its shelves and issued a public apology for the inconvenience.

“At Costco, the health and safety of our customers is our top priority,” the retailer said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with the FDA and taking all necessary steps to resolve this matter quickly.”

What’s Next

The FDA continues to investigate the source of the contamination and is conducting inspections at the supplier’s facilities. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Costco’s customer service hotline or visit the FDA’s website for more details.

This recall serves as a reminder for consumers to stay vigilant about food safety and to report any suspected issues with purchased products to the appropriate authorities.
