Diamondbacks Sweep Marlins Behind Homers from Smith, Naylor for Fifth Straight Win

The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their hot streak Thursday night, powering past the Miami Marlins 6-4 to complete a three-game sweep and notch their fifth straight win.

Pavin Smith and Josh Naylor each launched solo home runs to pace the Arizona offense, while Geraldo Perdomo also drove in two runs. Smith finished with two RBIs, including a third-inning double that brought in a run. Naylor’s homer was his third of the series, highlighting a dominant display of power from Arizona, which hit nine long balls in the sweep.

Corbin Carroll set the tone early, reaching base on a wild pitch to lead off the game, then stealing second and third before scoring on Perdomo’s sacrifice fly. Smith followed with a solo shot to put Arizona ahead 2-0 — a lead they never relinquished.

The Diamondbacks added two more in the fourth on RBI singles from Carroll and Perdomo, then capped their scoring in the fifth with Naylor’s solo blast.

On the basepaths, Arizona was relentless, swiping five bags, including three by Carroll, who extended his on-base streak to 25 games dating back to last season.

Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2) picked up the win despite a shaky outing, allowing 10 hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings. A.J. Puk shut the door in the ninth for his fourth save.

For the Marlins, Edward Cabrera (0-1) struggled in his first start of the season, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks over four innings. Miami had their chances but left 15 runners on base, including a critical moment in the seventh when third baseman Connor Norby, making his season debut after a strained oblique, struck out with the bases loaded. Norby finished 1 for 5.

Rob Brantly led Miami with three hits and an RBI. Xavier Edwards, Kyle Stowers, and Javier Sanoja each had two hits, with Edwards drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Marlins scored on an Eric Wagaman ground-rule double in the first, Brantly’s RBI hit in the fourth, a wild pitch that brought in Wagaman in the fifth, and Edwards’ walk in the seventh — but couldn’t come up with the big hit when needed.

The Diamondbacks head to Chicago, where Corbin Burnes (0-1, 5.28 ERA) will face off against Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (0-0, 1.00 ERA) on Friday.

The Marlins travel to Philadelphia to open a series against the Phillies, with Sandy Alcantara (2-0, 4.70 ERA) set to oppose Zack Wheeler (1-1, 4.07 ERA).
