FAU Edges Rice 51-49 in Wild American Conference Shootout

Florida Atlantic Wins Behind Easton Messer’s Five Touchdowns

Florida Atlantic delivered one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season Saturday, holding off Rice 51-49 in an American Conference shootout behind a spectacular five-touchdown performance from Easton Messer.

Messer totaled 262 all purpose yards, including 162 receiving yards on 12 catches, and returned a punt for a touchdown in a game that featured explosive plays, long scoring drives and nearly 1,000 combined rushing and passing yards. FAU also capitalized on a crucial special teams play, blocking a Rice punt for a safety early in the second quarter to help secure the two point victory.

The Owls improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in American Conference play, while Rice fell to 1-7 and 0-4 in conference action despite an extraordinary performance from quarterback Gael Ochoa, who rushed for 259 yards and scored four touchdowns in his first career start.

Easton Messer Leads FAU With Five Touchdowns

Messer was the centerpiece of Florida Atlantic’s offensive attack, producing another outstanding performance one week after recording 14 receptions in his sixth 100-yard receiving game of the season. The versatile playmaker caught 12 passes for 162 yards, including touchdown receptions of 1 and 68 yards. He also lined up in the backfield for three carries totaling 18 yards, scoring on runs of 2 and 5 yards.

Messer’s most important contribution came on special teams, where he returned a punt for a touchdown the longest punt return for a touchdown in program history. The return proved critical in a game decided by two points, giving the Owls another significant scoring play in a back-and-forth contest.

FAU quarterback Caden Veltkamp complemented Messer’s production by completing 29 of 37 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns. The Owls repeatedly found ways to move the football against a Rice defense that struggled to contain their explosive offensive weapons.

Gael Ochoa Delivers Historic Rushing Performance for Rice

Rice quarterback Gael Ochoa nearly led the Owls to a stunning upset with one of the most remarkable rushing performances in the country this season. Making his first start while filling in for injured starter Jacurri Brown, Ochoa rushed for 259 yards and scored four touchdowns on runs of 55, 52, 74 and 69 yards.

He finished just six yards short of Rice’s single-game rushing record while producing the biggest rushing performance in the Football Championship Subdivision this season, according to the supplied game notes. Ochoa repeatedly broke through the FAU defense for long scoring runs, keeping Rice within striking distance throughout the afternoon.

His combination of speed and explosiveness made him a constant threat, even as Florida Atlantic continued to answer with touchdowns of its own. Ochoa and Patrick Crayton Jr., who also filled in for the injured Brown, combined to complete four of seven passes as Rice leaned heavily on its running game. The Owls amassed 499 rushing yards and added 109 yards through the air, generating 608 total yards of offense. Despite that production, Rice came up just short of completing the comeback.

Blocked Punt for Safety Helps Decide the Game

With both offenses trading touchdowns, Florida Atlantic needed a difference-making play to create separation. Derrick Rogers Jr. provided it early in the second quarter by blocking a Rice punt that resulted in a safety.

The two points proved especially valuable in a game where neither defense could consistently slow the opposing offense. FAU carried a 23-21 advantage into halftime, setting the stage for an equally chaotic second half.

Both teams recorded three touchdown drives in the third quarter. Rice’s three scoring drives each covered 75 yards, requiring a total of 12 plays per drive, as Ochoa continued to find room against the Owls’ defense. Florida Atlantic answered with touchdown drives covering 75, 67 and 90 yards, maintaining its narrow advantage through an offensive barrage that left little margin for error.

Rice Makes a Late Push Before Falling Short

Rice refused to go away in the fourth quarter, with Ochoa continuing to create problems for the FAU defense. With 2:51 remaining, Ochoa connected with Braylen Walker on a 71-yard catch-and-run that gave the Owls another opportunity to pull off the comeback.

The late scoring play put additional pressure on Florida Atlantic to finish the game, but the Owls ultimately survived Rice’s final push. Rice kicker Tommy Bauchiero then had an opportunity to change the outcome with a 55-yard field-goal attempt with less than a minute remaining. The kick fell just short, allowing FAU to escape with the two-point victory.

Bauchiero’s career-long field goal was 45 yards, making the difficult attempt from 55 yards an ambitious effort in a game that came down to the final moments. The blocked punt for a safety and Messer’s record-setting punt return ultimately stood out as two of the most consequential plays in Florida Atlantic’s victory.

Up Coming Football for FAU and Rice

Florida Atlantic will look to build on the victory as it continues its American Conference schedule. The Owls improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, keeping themselves in the mix as the season progresses.

Rice, meanwhile, must regroup after another narrow defeat despite an outstanding offensive showing. At 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play, the Owls will need to turn their offensive production into victories as they move forward.

FAU is scheduled to visit North Texas on Thursday night, while Rice is slated to travel to North Texas on Nov. 11. The supplied schedule lists both teams against North Texas, so the dates and opponents should be verified before publication.

Florida Atlantic’s victory was a testament to its offensive firepower and ability to deliver in decisive moments. With Messer producing five touchdowns, Veltkamp throwing for 339 yards and the special teams delivering a pivotal safety, the Owls found just enough to outlast an inspired Rice team in one of the weekend’s wildest American Conference games.
