FAU Holds Off Memphis 89-78 Behind Vanterpool’s Near Triple-Double, Williams’ Record-Setting Defense

The Florida Atlantic men’s basketball team put together a wire-to-wire performance Sunday afternoon, defeating Memphis 89-78 at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena behind balanced scoring, dominant interior defense, and steady late-game execution.

FAU improved to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play, jumping out to an early lead and never relinquishing it against the Tigers (7-8, 2-1). The Owls were led by a near triple-double from redshirt sophomore guard Devin Vanterpool, who finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, and a standout defensive effort from redshirt sophomore forward Devin Williams, who recorded a career-high seven blocks.

Florida Atlantic wasted little time setting the tone. A quick 7-0 run in under a minute gave the Owls a 9-4 advantage, fueled by defensive pressure and transition offense. Williams made his presence felt early with multiple blocks, while Vanterpool knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead to 14-8.

The Owls maintained control throughout the first half, leaning on their defense to keep Memphis from finding a rhythm. Williams added two more blocks before the break, giving him four in the opening half to go along with seven points. FAU pushed the lead to as many as nine on a left-corner three by sophomore guard Isaiah Elohim, but the Tigers responded late, trimming the margin to 36-34 at halftime.

Florida Atlantic came out of the locker room with renewed energy, led by junior forward Xander Pintleon. Pintleon opened the half with an and-one on the Owls’ first possession and followed it with five more points to quickly stretch the lead back to nine.

Momentum continued to swing FAU’s way as back-to-back baskets from junior guard Kanaan Carlyle gave the Owls their first double-digit lead of the game. That advantage grew to as much as 17 as Florida Atlantic’s offense found its groove and the defense continued to disrupt Memphis inside.

The Tigers made a late push, cutting the lead to single digits, but FAU answered every time. Vanterpool orchestrated the offense down the stretch, repeatedly finding Williams for emphatic dunks that brought the home crowd to its feet. The Owls sealed the win at the free-throw line, converting seven attempts in the final three minutes to put the game out of reach.

With the victory, Florida Atlantic continued its strong play at home and showcased its ability to control games with defense, ball movement, and composure in key moments.
