Flu Vaccine Delivered to Your Door
For the first time in the United States, some adults and children can receive the nasal spray flu vaccine, FluMist, delivered directly to their homes. Beginning Friday, August 15, 2025, eligible customers can order the vaccine online through the new FluMist Home program. This program allows adults aged 18 to 49 to self-administer the vaccine and caregivers to administer it to children aged 2 to 17, providing a convenient alternative to clinic or pharmacy visits. Individuals under 2, over 49, or with certain health conditions—such as being immunocompromised, experiencing asthma with wheezing, or pregnancy—are not eligible for home administration.
The process is designed to ensure safety and convenience. Customers complete a medical screening questionnaire online, and a licensed healthcare provider reviews eligibility. Approved vaccines are shipped in temperature-controlled packaging and include instructional guides, videos, pharmacist support, and a prepaid envelope for safe disposal. Recipients are instructed to administer one spray per nostril, either immediately upon arrival or after refrigeration, following the detailed instructions provided. The goal is to remove barriers such as scheduling, travel, and needle anxiety, making flu vaccination more accessible—particularly for busy parents and families.
Cost for FluMist Home varies depending on insurance coverage. Most commercial insurance plans cover the vaccine similarly to in-office or pharmacy-administered doses, with a flat $8.99 shipping and processing fee covering up to four doses. Uninsured customers can expect to pay approximately $30 per dose, with coupons available to offset costs. FluMist’s effectiveness is comparable to traditional flu shots for healthy individuals under 50, and common side effects include mild flu-like symptoms, such as runny nose, congestion, sore throat, cough, or low-grade fever.
Public health experts see FluMist Home as a potential boost to declining flu vaccination rates. In the 2023–2024 flu season, only about 45% of adults and 55% of children received flu vaccines, leaving significant portions of the population vulnerable to seasonal influenza. By offering a needle-free, at-home option, FluMist Home may help increase vaccination rates, reduce flu-related hospitalizations, and make preventive care more convenient nationwide. For families in South Florida and across the country, this new delivery option represents a meaningful step toward improving access, convenience, and overall public health outcomes.
