Discovery on a Miami Street
A 6-year-old boy who had been reported missing was found wandering alone on a Miami street Wednesday evening in an incident that could have ended very differently if not for the actions of an unexpected passerby. The child was visibly alone in an area known for high levels of criminal activity, raising immediate concern from the person who eventually discovered him. Arnett Johnson, who says he has been living on a public bench for roughly six months after serving time in prison, was in the Seventh Avenue and Seventeenth Street area when he noticed something was wrong. He described looking around for any sign of an adult nearby and quickly realizing the child appeared to be unsupervised. “I’m looking around for the parent, but I looked and I don’t see nobody, you know what I’m saying, so what is this kid doing out here seven at night?” Johnson said.
Immediate Decision to Act
Rather than ignore the situation, Johnson said he immediately approached the child to make sure he was safe. He then contacted law enforcement and stayed with the boy until officers arrived on scene. Authorities were able to confirm the child had been reported missing, and he was taken into protective care. The response highlights a rare moment where someone living on the margins of society stepped into a critical protective role. Johnson remained with the child during the wait for police, ensuring he was not left alone again during those vulnerable moments.
Law Enforcement Response and Child Safety Review
Officers who arrived at the scene took custody of the child and began the process of notifying appropriate child welfare authorities. The situation is now being reviewed to determine how the child ended up alone in public and whether any neglect or endangerment occurred. Child welfare officials are expected to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance, including the timeline of when the child was last seen and how long he may have been alone before being found.
A Personal History Behind the Rescue
Johnson said he has been homeless since being released from prison, spending most nights on a bench in the same general area where he discovered the child. Despite his circumstances, he emphasized that he felt a responsibility to intervene when he saw a young child alone at night. The incident has drawn attention to both child safety concerns and the often overlooked role that homeless individuals can play in public safety when they are present in high traffic urban areas.
