The Jacksonville Jaguars pulled off a 26-21 road win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, a victory that combined opportunistic defense, special teams heroics, and a fiery sideline exchange between coaches.
The game’s tension boiled over late when Jaguars head coach Liam Coen and 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh had to be physically separated after Saleh accused the Jaguars of “stealing signs” — a claim Coen dismissed as “no big deal.” “I’m just going to keep that between us right now. That’s it,” Coen said after the game.
The Jaguars’ win was fueled by defensive dominance and a historic special teams play. Parker Washington returned a punt 87 yards for Jacksonville’s first punt return touchdown in eight seasons, a play that helped build a 26-14 lead. Jacksonville’s defense added four takeaways, highlighting their knack for creating turnovers. This marks the fourth consecutive game this season the Jaguars have generated at least three takeaways — already surpassing their total from the entire 2024 season.
Trevor Lawrence, who threw for 174 yards and one touchdown, connected with Hunter Long on a 4-yard scoring strike following a key interception by San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy. Running back Travis Etienne contributed 124 yards on 19 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run immediately after a forced fumble by Dennis Gardeck in the second quarter.
San Francisco fought back late. Purdy, making his first start since a two-game absence with a toe injury, finished 22-for-38 for 309 yards and two touchdowns. A 21-yard touchdown pass to Jake Tonges with 7:41 left cut the Jaguars’ lead to 26-21. The 49ers had a chance to complete the comeback after Cam Little missed a 47-yard field goal, but former Niners star Arik Armstead strip-sacked Purdy on the ensuing play. Foyesade Oluokun recovered the fumble, sealing the win for Jacksonville.
The victory gives the Jaguars their second 3-1 start in the past 18 seasons and their fifth road win ever on the West Coast in franchise history.
