Lester Holt Stepping Down
Lester Holt, the esteemed anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News,” has announced his decision to step down from the flagship evening newscast after a decade at its helm. This transition is set to take place at the beginning of the summer of 2025. Holt will continue his association with NBC, dedicating his efforts full-time to “Dateline NBC,” where he has served as the principal anchor since 2011.
In a heartfelt memo to his colleagues, Holt reflected on his journey, expressing pride in his tenure at “Nightly News” and “Dateline.” He reminisced about his early days as a 20-year-old radio reporter in San Francisco, highlighting the remarkable trajectory of his career.
As Holt transitions from “Nightly News,” speculation about his successor has emerged. Tom Llamas is widely considered a leading candidate, with Hallie Jackson also mentioned as a potential replacement. However, NBC News has not officially announced who will assume the anchor position.
This change comes amidst a series of high-profile shifts within NBC Universal and the broader media landscape. Notable departures include Chuck Todd from NBC and Jim Acosta from CNN, as networks adapt to evolving viewer habits and the increasing shift towards digital platforms.
Lester Holt’s distinguished career spans over four decades. Born on March 8, 1959, in Marin County, California, he began his journalism journey in radio before transitioning to television. Prior to joining NBC in 2000, Holt spent 14 years at WBBM-TV in Chicago. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with multiple honors, including Emmy Awards and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.
Beyond his professional achievements, Holt is known for his musical talents, particularly his proficiency with the bass guitar. He resides in Manhattan with his wife, Carol Hagen, and they have two sons, Stefan and Cameron. Stefan Holt has followed in his father’s journalistic footsteps and currently serves as the 10:00 pm anchor at WMAQ-TV in Chicago.
As Lester Holt prepares to embark on this new chapter, his legacy as a trusted voice in journalism and his contributions to broadcast news will undoubtedly be celebrated and remembered.
