Eury Pérez returned to form Tuesday night, delivering five scoreless innings as the Miami Marlins built a big lead and then held off a furious late push by the Colorado Rockies for a 6-5 victory at Coors Field.
Pérez (7-5) was dominant, allowing just one hit without issuing a walk while striking out six. He exited with a 6-0 cushion after Dane Myers and Jakob Marsee drove in two runs apiece to pace Miami’s offense.
The win was the Marlins’ fifth in their last six games, keeping their late-season surge alive. Meanwhile, the Rockies dropped their 110th game of the year, undone again by missed chances at the plate as they went just 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
Miami struck first in the third inning when Joey Wiemer was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a Javier Sanoja single, and scored on Otto Lopez’s sacrifice fly. Agustín Ramírez then drew a walk before Marsee doubled into the gap, plating both Sanoja and Ramírez for a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, Myers — activated earlier in the day off the injured list — broke the game open with a two-run double that scored Heriberto Hernández and Eric Wagaman. Myers then came home on Sanoja’s RBI double, chasing Colorado starter Kyle Freeland (4-16) from the game.
The game was delayed about an hour due to rain during the bottom half of that inning, but Miami maintained its momentum out of the break.
Colorado finally broke through in the eighth when Mickey Moniak launched a three-run home run off Michael Petersen, ending Miami relievers’ streak of 25 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it was the Marlins’ longest such run of the season.
In the ninth, Brenton Doyle singled to open the inning and scored on Yanquiel Fernández’s sacrifice fly. Moniak added an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, but Ronny Henriquez closed the door for his seventh save, recording the final four outs.
Miami’s lineup spread the production around: Sanoja, Hernández, and Wagaman each had two hits, with Wagaman extending his streak of multi-hit games to four.
The series continues Wednesday as the Marlins send Ryan Weathers (2-1, 2.73 ERA) to the mound against Colorado rookie McCade Brown (0-4, 9.88).
