Food Stamps
A metro Atlanta mother is facing an unimaginable hardship after discovering that someone had stolen her food stamp benefits, leaving her with no way to feed her family for the month. The woman, who relies on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide meals for her children, says fraudsters used up her Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card in Chamblee, Georgia.
A Shocking Discovery
The mother, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for her safety, told local news that she went to buy groceries only to find her balance wiped clean. Confused and panicked, she checked her transaction history and saw unfamiliar charges made in Chamblee, a location she had never visited.
“I just stood there in shock,” she said. “All of my benefits were gone. I had no idea what to do or how this could even happen.”
With no money left on her card and no immediate way to replace the stolen funds, the mother now faces a difficult reality—figuring out how to put food on the table for her children without the support she depends on.
Food Stamp Fraud on the Rise
Unfortunately, cases like hers are becoming increasingly common. Food stamp fraud, particularly through card skimming and cloning, has been on the rise across the country. Thieves use hidden skimming devices at ATMs and point-of-sale terminals to steal card information, then duplicate the card and spend the stolen benefits before the victim even realizes what has happened.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the SNAP program, has acknowledged the growing issue but has yet to implement widespread fraud protection measures. Unlike traditional credit and debit cards, EBT cards lack advanced security features such as chip technology, making them an easier target for fraudsters.
A Desperate Plea for Help
For struggling families, losing an entire month’s worth of food assistance is devastating. The victim in this case is now pleading for help, unsure of how she will feed her children in the coming weeks.
“I did everything right. I keep my PIN secure, I only use my card at places I trust, and yet this still happened to me,” she said. “Now, my kids and I are the ones suffering.”
She has reported the theft to the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS), but like many other victims of EBT fraud, she has been told that there are no immediate solutions. Unlike banks that reimburse customers for fraudulent charges, SNAP benefits are typically not replaced, leaving victims with few options.
Officials Urging Caution
In response to increasing fraud cases, officials are urging EBT recipients to take extra precautions, including:
Regularly checking account balances for unauthorized transactions.
Avoiding swiping their card at suspicious or unfamiliar locations.
Using EBT cards only at trusted stores and avoiding standalone ATMs.
Changing their PINs frequently.
While these measures can help, they do not eliminate the risk entirely. Until stronger security protections are put in place, thousands of families remain vulnerable to fraud, potentially losing the benefits they depend on for survival.
A Call for Change
Advocates for low-income families are calling on lawmakers to address the growing issue of EBT fraud and implement protections similar to those available for traditional banking customers. Many are pushing for EBT cards to include chip technology or additional security measures to prevent future theft.
As for the metro Atlanta mother, she continues to hope for a resolution but remains deeply concerned about her family’s immediate future.
“I just want to be able to feed my kids. That’s all I’m asking for,” she said. “No one should have to go through this.”
For now, she is relying on local food banks and community support to get through the month. But without systemic changes to prevent EBT fraud, many other struggling families could find themselves facing the same heartbreaking situation.
