Co-hosts Mexico delivered a commanding performance in front of a passionate home crowd, defeating Ecuador 2-0 at the iconic Estadio Azteca to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The victory sets up a tantalizing possibility for Mexico, who could face England in the next round should the Three Lions overcome DR Congo in their Round of 32 clash. Backed by more than 80,000 supporters, Mexico overcame a weather delay and produced an energetic display that underlined their credentials as one of the tournament’s most dangerous hosts.
Kick-off in Mexico City was postponed by an hour after a powerful thunderstorm swept across the stadium, but the delay did little to dampen the atmosphere. Once play finally got underway, the Mexican supporters created an electric environment that inspired their team from the opening whistle.
Mexico nearly grabbed an early breakthrough as Gilberto Mora fired just over the crossbar from long range before Raúl Jiménez glanced a header narrowly wide inside the opening 10 minutes.
Ecuador weathered the early pressure and almost stunned the hosts when John Yeboah struck the post with a well-hit effort against the run of play, serving as a warning that the South Americans remained a threat.
Mexico’s relentless attacking play was rewarded midway through the first half.
Roberto Alvarado released Julián Quiñones down the left flank with a perfectly weighted pass. Quiñones cut inside onto his stronger foot before curling a superb strike into the top corner, sending the home supporters into celebration.
The opening goal shifted momentum firmly in Mexico’s favor as Ecuador struggled to contain the hosts’ fluid movement and attacking combinations.
Mexico extended their lead in the 31st minute with another outstanding finish.
Quiñones combined brilliantly with Jiménez on the edge of the penalty area before the veteran striker unleashed a powerful shot into the roof of the net, giving Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez no chance.
The clinical finish capped an excellent first-half performance from Mexico, whose attacking duo consistently troubled Ecuador’s defense with intelligent movement and precise finishing.
Despite trailing by two goals, Ecuador nearly found a way back before halftime, but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced an excellent save to deny Yeboah and preserve Mexico’s comfortable advantage heading into the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Mexico controlling possession while remaining dangerous on the counterattack.
Galíndez prevented the scoreline from becoming more lopsided in the 66th minute, producing an outstanding save to keep out a powerful header from defender César Montes following a corner.
Ecuador’s best opportunity after halftime fell to Kevin Rodríguez after a clever pass from Moisés Caicedo, but the forward poked his effort wide as frustration continued to mount for the South American side.
Mexico’s disciplined defensive performance ensured Ecuador rarely threatened, with the hosts comfortably seeing out the closing stages to secure their place in the next round.
Ecuador’s disappointing evening ended on an even sourer note during stoppage time.
Piero Hincapié was shown a red card after covering his mouth during an altercation with Santiago Giménez, leaving Ecuador to finish the match with 10 men.
The dismissal summed up a frustrating night for Ecuador, who were second best for much of the contest and ultimately unable to recover after Mexico’s clinical first-half display.
With home support driving them forward and confidence continuing to build, Mexico advanced to the Round of 16 after producing one of their most complete performances of the tournament.
Quiñones and Jiménez provided the goals, the defense remained composed throughout, and Rangel delivered when called upon as the co-hosts continued their dream of lifting the World Cup on home soil.
Now, all eyes turn to the outcome of England’s meeting with DR Congo, with Mexico awaiting the winner in what promises to be one of the standout ties of the Round of 16.
