Miami Grand Prix 2026 Preview: F1 Returns with Momentum, Questions, and Heat

After a five week pause, Formula 1 roars back to life in South Florida for the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, the first U.S. stop of the season and just the second Sprint weekend on the calendar. Set for Sunday, May 3 at 4 p.m. ET, the race brings together a grid full of momentum swings, early dominance, and unanswered questions.

The story of 2026 so far has been the resurgence of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. George Russell opened the season with a win in Australia. Rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli followed with back-to-back victories in China and Japan, signaling a potential changing of the guard.

Mercedes enters Miami as the team to beat but the chasing pack is tightening. McLaren rebounded in Japan after a rough start plagued by retirements. Oscar Piastri secured a strong second-place finish. Defending champion Lando Norris finished fifth, still searching for peak form.

Meanwhile, Scuderia Ferrari has quietly stacked three podiums, staying within striking distance. The question is whether consistency can turn into wins under Miami’s intense conditions.

For Red Bull Racing, the early season hasn’t gone to plan. Max Verstappen a two-time Miami winner faces the challenge of dragging the team back to the front.

Aston Martin, meanwhile, arrives desperate for answers after a disappointing start to 2026. Miami could be a turning point or a deeper concern.

F1 heads into Miami fresh off a major regulatory update implemented immediately. Combined with the long break, teams face a compressed learning curve especially critical during a Sprint weekend with limited practice time.

To compensate, the FIA has extended Friday’s only practice session to 90 minutes, giving teams a rare chance to recalibrate.
