Michigan Knocks Off No. 11 Oklahoma 17-10 in Signature Week 2 Victory

Underwood, Michigan Deliver When It Matters Most

Michigan answered plenty of offseason questions with a statement win Saturday, defeating No. 11 Oklahoma 17-10 in a hard-fought Week 2 matchup. Jordan Marshall scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run midway through the fourth quarter after Jyaire Hill intercepted Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, while Bryce Underwood added a 38-yard touchdown run to help the Wolverines improve to 2-0.

The victory was an important response for Michigan after the Wolverines became the subject of jokes following last week’s dramatic win over Western Michigan. A fortunate break put one second back on the clock, giving Underwood another opportunity to complete a game-winning Hail Mary.

Michigan’s performance against Oklahoma was far more convincing. Underwood showed the improvement Michigan coach Jeff Whittingham had been looking for after saying earlier in the week that the young quarterback needed to show progress to keep his job.

Underwood finished with 87 rushing yards, including his 38-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. He also completed enough passes to finish with 111 passing yards and, most importantly, did not commit a turnover.

Oklahoma Never Finds the Lead

The Sooners entered the game as nearly a touchdown favorite, but Oklahoma never led. The Sooners struggled to generate consistent offense and remained scoreless until midway through the third quarter, when Mateer connected with Mackenzie Alleyne on a 22-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 10-10.

Oklahoma had opportunities to take control late, but Michigan’s defense repeatedly came through. With 3:05 remaining, the Sooners had possession at midfield but turned the ball over on downs after gaining only three yards.

Oklahoma received one final opportunity at its own 15-yard line with 1:06 remaining. However, the Sooners gained just 10 yards before running out of time, allowing Michigan to secure the victory.

Hill’s Interception Changes the Game

Hill played a major role in the decisive sequence despite an earlier mistake. He had been called for unnecessary roughness when Oklahoma had the ball at its own 2-yard line in the third quarter, but he redeemed himself when Michigan needed a big play most.

With the game tied, Hill stepped in front of a Mateer pass at the Oklahoma 30-yard line and returned the interception 24 yards. The turnover gave Michigan excellent field position and set up Marshall’s 1-yard touchdown run, putting the Wolverines ahead 17-10 midway through the fourth quarter. Michigan’s defense then made the lead stand, stopping Oklahoma on its final two possessions.

Sloppy Play Nearly Overshadows Michigan’s Win

While the victory was significant, Michigan still has plenty to clean up. The Wolverines were penalized 11 times for 90 yards, following a Week 1 performance in which they committed nine penalties for 80 yards.

Oklahoma wasn’t much better. The Sooners were flagged nine times for 76 yards, mistakes that made an already difficult comeback attempt even more challenging.

Despite the penalties and offensive struggles, Michigan found a way to win its biggest game of the young season. The Wolverines improved to 2-0, while Oklahoma fell to 1-1.

For Michigan, the victory provides more than just another win. It offers an early-season confidence boost and gives Underwood and Whittingham a signature victory over a ranked opponent as the Wolverines continue to build momentum.
