New Jersey Man Arrested After Allegedly Telling Black Neighbor He “Never Has These Problems With White People”
A New Jersey man is facing criminal charges after police say he made racially charged comments during a heated confrontation with a Black neighbor that was captured on video and spread rapidly across social media this week. Authorities in Mount Laurel say 40-year-old Thomas DiOrio was arrested and charged with harassment and bias intimidation following an incident Monday evening on the 3000 block of Saxony Drive.
According to police, the altercation happened around 6:30 p.m. and allegedly began over an argument involving children in the neighborhood. What may have initially appeared to be a local dispute quickly escalated into a viral controversy after video of the confrontation was posted online. The footage, which circulated heavily on TikTok and other platforms, reportedly amassed more than one million views within days. In the video, DiOrio can allegedly be heard repeatedly yelling at a Black female neighbor during the argument.
Police Say Comments Became Basis for Bias Charges
When officers first responded to the scene Monday night, police said neither party wanted to press charges at the time. However, investigators later launched a follow-up review after examining the viral footage and conducting additional interviews. According to court documents cited by local media, DiOrio allegedly used the phrase “you people” during the confrontation.
Investigators say that when police questioned him about the statement, he explicitly acknowledged he was referring to Black people and allegedly stated that he “never seems to have these problems with white people.”
That statement became central to the bias intimidation charge now filed against him. Under New Jersey law, bias intimidation charges can apply when prosecutors believe a criminal act was motivated, in whole or in part, by race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other protected categories.
Viral Videos Continue Driving Public Accountability
The case highlights the growing role social media now plays in modern policing and public accountability. Incidents that once may have remained isolated neighborhood disputes can now become national controversies within hours once footage spreads online. In this case, police only moved forward with a deeper investigation after reviewing the video evidence that circulated publicly. The incident also reflects a broader trend in which viral recordings increasingly become the primary evidence driving both criminal investigations and public pressure campaigns.
Court Appearance Expected
DiOrio remains in custody and was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon, according to reports. Police have not released additional details about whether further charges could be considered. The investigation remains ongoing.
