No. 13 Florida Dominates Virginia 87-69 in SEC/ACC Challenge

In a dominant performance, No. 13 Florida defeated Virginia 87-69 on Wednesday night in the SEC/ACC Challenge, maintaining their unbeaten streak and improving to 9-0. Led by Walter Clayton’s 27 points, including five 3-pointers, the Gators matched their best start since their 2005-06 national championship season.

Florida’s offense shined, but their defense played a crucial role as well. The Gators forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 20 points. This pressure allowed them to erase an early nine-point deficit and take control in the second half.

The star of the night, Clayton hit 10 of his 19 shots, including a pivotal four-point play in the second half. His confidence carried over from pregame comments, where he dismissed concerns about Virginia’s defense and standout guard Isaac McKneely.

The forward contributed 19 points and eight rebounds, providing a strong interior presence. Martin added 16 points, while Aberdeen scored 12, including two critical 3-pointers during a first-half 15-0 run that turned a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead.

Virginia’s Elijah Saunders led the Cavaliers with 19 points, while McKneely contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Florida’s balanced attack and relentless defense.

The Gators have won every game this season by at least 13 points, showcasing their depth and consistency. Head coach Todd Golden’s squad also displayed their defensive prowess with nine steals, bringing their season total to 74 in nine games. The Gators’ ability to capitalize on turnovers continues to be a key factor in their success.

The Cavaliers, now 5-3, have struggled against tougher opponents, losing all three of their most challenging games by double digits. Despite a strong start, Virginia couldn’t maintain their momentum, as turnovers and defensive lapses allowed Florida to seize control.

Florida’s game-changing 15-0 run in the first half shifted the momentum. Sparked by three consecutive 3-pointers, two from Aberdeen, the Gators turned a six-point deficit into a comfortable lead, which they never relinquished.

The Gators will look to continue their hot streak when they face Arizona State in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta on Dec. 14. The Cavaliers open ACC play on Saturday at SMU, seeking to rebound from their recent struggles.

Florida’s strong start has fans optimistic about another deep postseason run, while Virginia will need to regroup quickly as conference play begins.
