Northwestern Opens New Ryan Field With Dominant Win Over Penn State

Wildcats Roll in Ryan Field Debut

Northwestern celebrated the opening of its new $875 million Ryan Field in emphatic fashion Friday night, routing Penn State 34-13 behind career performances from running backs Caleb Komolafe and Joseph Himon II. Komolafe rushed for a career-high 188 yards and a touchdown, while Himon added a career-best 162 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries as the Wildcats piled up season highs of 413 rushing yards and 506 total yards.

The performance was a memorable one for Northwestern (3-1, 1-1 Big Ten), which played its first game at the new stadium built on the same site as the former Ryan Field. The Wildcats led from start to finish while bouncing back from a difficult 29-23 loss at No. 6 Indiana.

Northwestern Takes Control Early

Northwestern opened a 10-0 lead when Aidan Chiles scored on a 2-yard keeper with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter. Himon set up the touchdown with a 47-yard run, immediately putting Penn State’s defense under pressure. Penn State (3-2, 0-2) answered in the second quarter when Carson Hansen scored on an 8-yard touchdown run.

The Nittany Lions, however, could not build any momentum from there. Himon responded with touchdown runs of 38 and 11 yards, turning Northwestern’s rushing attack into the defining factor of the game. Penn State had an opportunity to cut into the deficit before halftime, but Ryan Barker missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt.

Wildcats Pull Away After Halftime

Northwestern continued to pour it on after the break, opening a 31-7 lead when Komolafe scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter. Chiles sparked the scoring drive with a 15-yard run and then connected with Griffin Wilde for a 31-yard completion on consecutive plays.

The Wildcats’ combination of explosive rushing plays and timely passing kept Penn State from mounting a comeback. Komolafe and Himon accounted for 350 rushing yards between them, while Northwestern’s 413 yards on the ground marked a season high.

Penn State Drops Second Straight

Penn State’s offense struggled to keep pace throughout the night. Rocco Becht completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions. The Nittany Lions finished with 291 total yards and 20 first downs. The loss marked their second straight after they blew a 17-point lead in a 24-20 loss to Wisconsin in their Big Ten opener.

It is the first season under coach Matt Campbell, and Penn State now finds itself 0-2 in conference play. Northwestern, meanwhile, gets a much-needed boost after its narrow loss to Indiana and can carry the momentum from its historic home opener into the rest of its Big Ten schedule.

Next Saturday Games

Penn State returns home to host Southern California on Oct. 10, looking to snap its two-game losing streak and earn its first Big Ten victory of the season. Northwestern also returns home Oct. 10 when the Wildcats host Ball State as they look to build on their dominant opening-night performance at the new Ryan Field.
