Orioles Ride Alonso’s Power, Rutschman’s Bat to 7-4 Win Over Marlins

The Baltimore Orioles continued to rebound from a rough weekend in New York, collecting their second straight victory over the Miami Marlins with a 7-4 win Wednesday night in Miami.

Slugger Pete Alonso blasted a three-run homer, while Adley Rutschman delivered two RBI doubles as Baltimore moved closer to a three-game sweep after being outscored 39-10 during a four-game series against the Yankees earlier this week.

Alonso wasted little time making an impact against one of his favorite opponents. Facing Marlins starter Eury Pérez in the top of the first inning, Alonso crushed an 0-2 fastball 407 feet into the left-center field seats for a three-run homer that gave Baltimore an early 3-0 advantage.

The long ball added another chapter to Alonso’s dominance against Miami. Since debuting in 2019, Alonso now owns 57 extra-base hits against the Marlins — the most by any player against a single opponent during that span. He has also slugged 33 home runs in 105 career games against Miami dating back to his years with the Mets.

Miami answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Jakob Marsee ripped a two-run double to spark the rally, and Owen Caissie followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

That would be the last major breakthrough against Orioles starter Brandon Young, who settled down impressively after the rocky first inning. Young improved to 3-1 after allowing three runs early but keeping Miami scoreless over the next five innings.

Baltimore regained control in the fourth inning when Dylan Beavers lined a ground-rule double to put the Orioles back in front. Rutschman then padded the lead with RBI doubles in both the fifth and seventh innings, continuing his productive series at the plate.

The Orioles added another insurance run in the eighth when Blaze Alexander tripled home a run to make it 7-3.

Meanwhile, veteran outfielder Taylor Ward quietly fueled the offense despite not recording a hit. Ward drew three walks and scored all three times he reached base, raising his on-base percentage from .429 to .434 — one of the best marks in baseball.

Pérez took the loss for Miami, falling to 2-4 after allowing five runs over five innings. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out six but struggled with command, issuing five walks while giving up four hits.

Baltimore’s bullpen closed the door late, with Rico Garcia tossing a clean ninth inning for his second save of the season. Garcia has been nearly untouchable this year, allowing just one run across 18 appearances for a sparkling 0.53 ERA.

The Orioles will now look to complete a three-game sweep Thursday night when left-hander Cade Povich (1-1, 4.41 ERA) takes the mound against Marlins right-hander Max Meyer (2-0, 2.68 ERA).
