The San Diego Padres overcame an early 3-0 deficit and capped a thrilling extra-innings comeback with a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night at Petco Park. Manny Machado tied the game with a clutch solo home run in the eighth inning, and Tyler Wade scored the winning run in the 11th on a wild pitch to seal the victory for the Padres.
Down 3-0 after two innings, the Padres chipped away at the deficit and eventually prevailed in extras, snapping back into form after a difficult 2-7 road trip.
The Marlins wasted no time getting on the board, as Jesús Sánchez singled and scored on Agustín Ramírez’s RBI double in the top of the first. Otto Lopez added a two-out RBI single to make it 2-0, and Sánchez extended the lead in the second with a 417-foot solo homer to center field — his third of the season — off Padres starter Randy Vásquez.
Despite the rough start, Vásquez settled down and gave the Padres 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
San Diego’s rally began in the fourth, when Xander Bogaerts singled with two outs and stole second — his 10th steal of the season. Jake Cronenworth reached on a throwing error by Marlins third baseman Connor Norby, and Luis Campusano walked to load the bases. Veteran infielder José Iglesias then delivered a two-run double to left to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Machado evened the game with his sixth home run of the year, a leadoff blast to left-center in the eighth inning off reliever Calvin Faucher. The veteran slugger has now gone deep in back-to-back games and has three homers in his last four.
The game remained tied into the 11th, where Wade entered as the automatic runner at second base in place of Machado. After moving to third on a groundout, the Marlins intentionally walked Bogaerts to set up a double-play opportunity. With five infielders drawn in — including an outfielder — Miami reliever Cade Gibson (0-2) spiked a 1-2 curveball in the dirt to Jake Cronenworth, allowing Wade to sprint home with the winning run.
Adrián Morejón (2-2) earned the win for San Diego, stranding a Marlins runner at third in the top of the 11th to preserve the tie. David Morgan made his MLB debut for the Padres and retired both batters he faced.
Miami’s bullpen faltered late despite a strong outing from starter Ryan Weathers, who allowed just two unearned runs over 5 2/3 innings. The Marlins’ pitching struggles continued overall, as their team ERA now stands at 5.31 — second-worst in the National League behind Colorado. Meanwhile, the Padres’ staff sports a 3.52 ERA, third-best in the NL.
San Diego improved to 30-22 with the win and will send right-hander Stephen Kolek (2-1, 2.84 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday. Miami (19-33) will counter with right-hander Max Meyer (3-4, 4.15 ERA) in the second game of the series.
