Reagan-Appointed Judge Resigns, Calling Trump a “Unique Danger” to American Democracy

After 40 years on the federal bench, Judge Mark L. Wolf a Reagan appointee and lifelong public servant has resigned, warning that Donald Trump’s continued influence poses a direct threat to the rule of law in the United States. In a candid essay for The Atlantic and a televised interview with PBS’s Amna Nawaz, Wolf said he could no longer stay silent as the foundations of American justice are undermined by political manipulation and presidential overreach.

A Reagan-Era Conservative Breaks Ranks

Wolf’s resignation carries unusual weight because of his background. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1985, Wolf is no liberal partisan. He spent more than five decades in public service, first as a prosecutor at the Department of Justice during Watergate, and then as a federal judge in Massachusetts. In his Atlantic essay, Wolf wrote:

“The White House’s assault on the rule of law is so deeply disturbing to me that I feel compelled to speak out. Silence, for me, is now intolerable.”

That silence, he said, has become dangerous. Wolf described a culture where the Justice Department has been warped to serve political retaliation rather than impartial enforcement of the law.

Trump’s Direct Interference With Justice

During his PBS interview, Wolf was explicit about what he sees as a crisis of integrity inside the federal system.

“This president repeatedly, overtly directs the Department of Justice to prosecute his perceived political enemies,” he said, “at the same time that the Department of Justice is not investigating possible corruption by people close to the president and people who are doing things to profit the president and his family.”

Such double standards, he warned, dismantle the very foundation of “equal justice under law,” the phrase engraved on the U.S. Supreme Court building and the ideal that guided his career.

Threats, Fear, and the Erosion of Judicial Confidence

Wolf also revealed that federal judges are facing unprecedented hostility and even threats to their lives as a result of Trump’s rhetoric.

“The president’s vitriolic comments have coincided with threats of harm, death threats among others, to many federal judges,” he said. “Judges are genuinely concerned about that and concerned for their families.”

He noted that judges cannot publicly defend themselves against attacks from political figures, leaving the public vulnerable to false narratives that judges are “crooked” or “corrupt” when they rule against the president. The result, he said, is the slow collapse of trust, the single most important currency in a constitutional democracy.

A Judge’s Final Warning to America

Wolf said his decision to resign was not out of despair, but determination to help protect democracy while he still can.

“I don’t expect I’m going to make a difference myself,” he said, “but if I can contribute, working with others who urge me to join them in this effort to protect our rule of law and our democracy that’s long made the United States the world’s best hope, I feel compelled to try, despite the foreseeable risks.”

At 79, Wolf made clear that he’s seen this movie before, presidents testing the limits of power. But this time, he fears, the guardrails that held during Watergate may not survive.

“Judges don’t have armies to enforce their orders,” he said. “They rely on the support of the American people who want to live in a true democracy.”

Why This Moment Matters

Wolf’s resignation is more than a personal act of conscience, it’s a warning shot from inside the system. The quiet professionals who once relied on tradition, ethics, and restraint now see those same norms under attack. If democracy is the rule of law, then the rule of law depends on public belief that no one, not even a president, is above it. Wolf’s voice joins a growing chorus of conservative jurists, former prosecutors, and career officials who say the line between democracy and dictatorship is thinning.

And this time, silence isn’t an option.
